14. General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position
Plan, prioritize, and schedule work assignments to ensure accurate and timely completion, extract environmental
samples, draft Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) ensuring that the quality of work output meets all federal
and state requirements, resolve technical problems, and perform cleanup of extracts using the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved methods. Back up for Bacti analysis. Employee will be in on
weekend/Holiday rotation for Bacti Analysis and sample receiving.

Prioritize own work assignments to ensure completion in an accurate and timely manner.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
 Extract and clean up of various matrices such as soil, sludge, oil, and water for trace organic analysis within the
U.S. EPA specified holding times.
 Operate and maintain various scientific instruments such as soxhlet extraction apparatus, zero headspace
extractions, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), automated solvent extractor, analytical balance, centrifuge,
and turbovap evaporators.
 Perform chemical isolation techniques such as GPC, silica gel, florisil, etc. Must also utilize a good understanding
of the properties and mixtures of hazardous and flammable solvents such as methylene chloride, hexane,
petroleum ether, etc.
 Enter and track all solvents and standards in the stock tracking or semivolatile organic standard logbooks.
Prepare surrogates, acids, and base mixtures for use and entry into standard logbooks ensuring that all chemicals
are properly labeled for identification and tracking.
 Order Supplies in a timely manner.
 Extraction using US EPA Methods 3510 and 3545.
 Cleanup of extracts using US EPA Methods 3620, 3630 & 3640.

Ensure that a quality assurance (QA) program that meets state and federal requirements is followed.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
 Extract and clean-up of appropriate quality control (QC) during all phases of each procedure.
 Direct and inform Laboratory Scientist(s) and/or Unit Manager of method revision and/or alternatives.
 Perform method development, revision, and validation in conjunction with a Laboratory Scientist(s) or the Unit
Manager.
 Draft and/or revise SOPs.

Perform microbiological analysis of drinking water samples. Perform sample receiving functions on scheduled
weekend/holidays and assist at other times when needed.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
 Perform microbiological analyses of drinking water samples.
 Perform Bacti analysis as needed.
 Some Saturday and Holiday hours per rotation with other Laboratory Technicians.
 Login Samples into LabWorks as needed.

Work closely with Laboratory Scientist(s) on analytical sample set up, validation and reporting of data.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
 Communicate with Laboratory Scientist(s) to properly perform sample set up, validation and reporting of data.
 Work with Lab Scientist on extraction recoveries as needed.
 Validate volatile data as time permits.
 Assist unit manager in reviewing draft reports.

Determining how to extract and schedule samples. These decisions affect sample receiving staff, Laboratory
Scientists performing analysis, and field staff and other clients who receive results.

Daily work assignments and changes to methods, techniques, etc., require supervisory review.
18. What kind of physical effort is used to perform this job? What environmental conditions is this position physically exposed to on
the job? Indicate the amount of time and intensity of each activity and condition. Refer to instructions.
Standing for long periods of time, the ability to routinely lift sample and solvent bottles weighing up to 15 pounds,
and daily exposure to and use of potentially hazardous chemicals. This exposure is minimized to a safe level with
the use of the safety equipment provided.

EDUCATION:
Associates degree or higher in engineering technology, physical or biological sciences or a related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Previous extraction and cleanup experience using US EPA Methods 3510, 3545, 3620, 3630 and 3640.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to carefully follow directions and ask appropriate questions as analytical problems arise.
