EDWARD and HANNAH DESCENDANT NEWSLETTER Issue No 5/13 September Meeting; A well attended meeting was held in Glenbrook with Chris Parker from the UK as our special guest. We also had two new members attending for the first time and they were made welcome. The weather was kind to us after what started out as being doubtful with several travelling through rain on their way but blue skies greeted everyone on their arrival. There was a lot of talking and saying hello to our new members to find out their descendent line, while we were having morning tea. Of course our UK visitor Chris was not left out with some general talk about his history and where he lives. At left is a photo of Chris with the descendents of Stephen Parker, Chris’s very distant cousions. Ann served a very nice lunch for everyone with plenty of food. Ann also showed off some of her orchids that were in bloom. Lost & Found After the meeting a Gold Pen was found, it will be taken to the next meeting if the owner would like to come forward to claim it. Also a name tag, I will bring it to the next meeting for you Colleen unless you want it earlier. “Edward & Hannah Corner” September/October 2013 marks the 229th anniversary of when Edward was committed on the 18 th September 1784 by T Pottat esq. and convicted on the 5th October 1784 at Gloucester Quarter Sessions of stealing a great coat belonging to William Barnard. The 1st October 2013 was the 215th birthday of Edward & Hannah’s 4th child, Harriet; you would have to assume that she would not have had any big birthday parties during her life. “History in Edward & Hannah’s time” Captain Arthur Phillip He was born in October 1738 and died in August 1814, and he had a naval career before being chosen to bring the First Fleet to Australia. Xavier Marcus Darren Moss Thank you Colleen for the info and photo “Members History Find” Carmen our efficient Secretary sends the following:. Earlier this year I visited my brother near Tamworth, and we stopped at the Wallabadah First Fleet memorial garden on our way home. The garden itself is quite nice, and a peaceful spot for reflection on our First Fleet past. There are gardens with reproductions of each ship, and corresponding 'headstones' engraved with the names of every person aboard that ship. Left; is the “Friendship” plaque. Right; is the 'headstones' with the names of all on board the “Friendship”. There are also some other signs with First Fleet information. I would encourage our members who might be travelling that way to stop and take a look. There are toilets, but anyone looking for a snack should stop up the road first and 'byo'! Carmen Ed; Thank you Carmen, Wallabadah is approx. 60 km south of Tamworth “Searching History” As Carmen noted in the minutes from the last meeting there is a document available (20 pages) at the address below which gives a large number of Australian history groups’ and UK history groups’ web addresses. www.sag.org.au/downloads/RUL leaflet.pdf Cherokee Wisdom One evening an old Cherokee Chief told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two "wolves" inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?" The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed." “Next Meeting” November is flagged for a picnic at Pugh’s Lagoon, as we have done in the past, as it is a nice spot despite not being named for “our” Edward. Date set for Saturday 16th November.
