Global Cost of a Graduate Fellowship at ILRI The new approach to funding and costing of the graduate fellowship at ILRI provides a well-coordinated and standardized structure that will be applied consistently across all research programs. This structure will be made available to research managers, project leaders, program management officers (PMOs) and all other stakeholders who are involved in project planning and resource mobilization of the graduate fellowship. Mandatory Costs These are the minimum requirements before a graduate fellow can be accepted to join any ILRI any graduate training programme. Other rates may apply according to the specific contract between Fellow and ILRI e.g. AWARD, JIRCAS, KARI etc. to be considered on a case by case basis. The amount will be paid in equivalent local currency of the duty station country. For Kenyan nationals, Tax and other statutory deductions are applicable. Other nationals should comply with any regulations regarding declaration and payment of income tax in their home countries. Health Insurance 900 Prorated to 3M/6M/1Year packages. NHIF (National Hospital Insurance Fund) WIBA (Work Injury Benefits Act) 46 240 This amount will be deducted from the stipend (approx. $4/month) It is applicable to all nationals. This is a statutory requirement. NSSF (National Social Security Fund) Security (student badge one off payment ($6) Air Travel (estimate) 30 Applies to Kenyan nationals only. 6 One off payment. 800 Economy ticket beginning and end of fellowship. Estimate @ way $1200 total $2400. 3 year program = $800/year. Airfare within African countries may be much less. Travel Insurance 80 Estimate @ way $40 ILRI Transport Costs 330 This will cover ILRI bus transport costs. CapDev administration fee 250 Other costs to consider These costs are only included here to raise awareness on what to consider when planning/budgeting for a graduate fellowship. Most of them will already be covered in the overall project budget while others like IT and Space charges are optional. Supervisory Cost (5% of scientist global cost 5B) 7460 This will cater for the time that the supervisor spends mentoring the graduate fellow e.g. planning meeting, weekly/monthly/yearly reviews.
