Oaxacan Animal Artwork
Essential Question: Of the media learned so far this year, which would be most appropriate for
creating a Oaxacan styled animal artwork?

Goal: To expand the students’ knowledge about the visual culture of Mexico
Objective: To view and discuss images of Oaxacan animal carvings
Objective: To use appropriate vocabulary when discussing artworks
Goal: To explore the use of pattern and color in art work
Objective: To experiment with a variety of media to develop ideas and designs
Objective: To compare and contrast multiple medias in the creation of artworks
Project Description:
Choosing from the available media used in Art 1 this semester, each student will create an artwork
in the style of Oaxacan artists.
Project Requirements:
Your Project Must…
 Have at least two preliminary designs created with two different media completed in your
sketchbook before work may begin on the final artwork
 Be a stylized animal (real or imaginary) NO Popular culture!
 Have contrasting colors
 Have a variety of patterns
 Be a sculpture (paper mache) that is structurally sound
o Paper mache sculptures may be no larger than 12”x18” in any direction
o Paper mache sculptures must be painted with two coats of acrylic paint as a primer; acrylic
or tempera paint may be used to add color and pattern
Or
 Be a 2D artwork that is created on a sheet of 12x18” paper
o Please ask for the appropriate paper for your chosen media!
 2D Media: Colored Pencil, Watercolor Pencil, Watercolor, Acrylic Paint
 NO WATERBASED MARKERS ARE ALLOWED! If a student provides their own
colored Sharpie markers, they may be used
 Demonstrate a sophisticated use of the chosen media (see ‘Characteristics of Good Craftsmanship)
