Step by Step Unit
Day 1- Shift Happens video, discussion of various definitions
Day 2- Read play from Focus: Globalization out loud
Day 3- Find articles in current news publications, Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World
Report, etc. on globalization and it's impact
Day 4- Continue finding and discussing articles, have students begin to discuss pros and cons
Day 5- Begin working with the millennium development goals by UNICEF. Introduce, show
students goals. Use

DG_Report_2007e.pdf to assign students a continent. Have students report the progress made
by each continent on each goal. Students create their own graphs using Excel or a Inspiredata or
any other comparable program.
Day 6-Finish Reporting of each continent and label on map for all students to see. Make
generalizations of areas that need improvement.
Day 7- Discuss progress
Day 8-11- Give Assignment to write a 5 paragraph essay either for or against globalization.
Have students use essay map on readwritethink.org to organize essay before they begin to write.
Essay map can be printed out and submitted either with completed essay or before. Forcing
students to complete map ahead of time helps prevent problems.
OPTIONS:
** Have students complete rough draft and read their paper out loud to another
student to correct mistakes
** Partner with the English teacher to do anonymous peer editing
**Anonymously distribute rough drafts to groups to comment on (use post-its
on the rough drafts)
