Non-members: $35
Pharmacy students: $20
Fee includes continental breakfast, lunch, and attendance to the CE program. Payment is expected on
the day of the program. No refunds will be given and payment is expected from anyone who does not
attend without providing a 48-hour notice of cancellation.

Objectives for Pharmacists:
 Discuss the role of the pharmacist in emergency medicine
 Review various tools and educational opportunities available to develop clinical pharmacy services in the emergency
department
 Explain the implementation and documentation of pharmacy services in the emergency department
 Identify challenges related to practicing in the emergency department setting
 Define specific conditions associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and mechanisms that exacerbate the
condition
 Outline the non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment options recommended by the task force for PCOS
 Describe metformin’s role in the treatment of PCOS
 Identify patients that would benefit from glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 agonist therapy
 Discuss provisions in the transparency bills and the implications behind them in terms of benefiting patient care and the
overall healthcare system
 Recall the complications of chronic kidney disease
 Distinguish ferric citrate from other phosphate binders
 Recognize appropriate dosing and instructions for use with ferric citrate
 Describe the niche for ketamine use in continuous sedation of ICU patients
 Define the field of pharmacogenomics
 Assess influence of analytical validity, clinical validity, and clinical utility data on clinical pharmacogenetics
 Know the importance of defining evidence for clinical implementation of pharmacogenomics
 Review existing pharmacogenomics clinical practice guideline resources
 Validate benefits of applying pharmacogenetic principles to patient care
 Describe the mechanisms behind the three neurobiologic systems associated with self-mutilation
 Explain why naltrexone is being investigated as a treatment option and where its place will be in therapy
 Name the microorganisms affected by oritavancin when treating acute skin and skin structure infections
 Recognize the specific precautions of oritavancin when used in acute skin and skin structure
 Describe the role of normal saline for volume replacement
 Discuss the implications that new naloxone regulations will have on the opioid abuse problem in Pennsylvania
 Describe the new prescribing authority allowing pharmacists in California and Oregon to prescribe birth control
Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians:
 List two organizations that support pharmacy services in the emergency department
 Name two responsibilities that pharmacy technicians can have in the emergency department
 Define a “best possible medication history” (BPMH)
 Understand the importance of accurate medication reconciliation
 List the recommended treatments for infertility
 Describe metformin’s role in the treatment of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
 List five brand name glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 agonists.
 Analyze arguments made by drug companies to focus on “value” instead of cost for highly priced medications
 Identify patient populations who may benefit from treatment with ferric citrate
 Identify an indication of ketamine in a critically ill population
 Define the field of pharmacogenomics
 Know the importance of pharmacogenomics for dosing of specific medications
 List clinical practice guideline resources for pharmacogenomics
 Know the benefits of applying pharmacogenetic principles to patient care
 Be able to differentiate between self-injury and suicide
 Describe the current treatment guidelines for self-injury behaviors
 List disease states that oritavancin can be used for
 Recognize the similarities and differences between oritavancin and vancomycin
 Name two products that are used for volume replacement
 Outline the new regulations that will take place in Pennsylvania under Act 139
 Discuss how pharmacy workflow will be impacted by new pharmacist prescribing regulations in California and Oregon

Information: This is a knowledge based program intended for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy
students. The seminars presented by NWPSHP are developed to reflect the needs of our members.
These needs are reviewed and assessed annually. Pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy
students with an interest in learning about clinical updates in pharmacy practice should consider
attending this meeting.
Successful completion requires evaluation of the entire session. The evaluation form must be
completed and returned at the conclusion of the program. Partial credit will not be given for late
arrivals or early departures.
This educational session was planned by Stephen Henderson, PharmD and the other officers of
NWPSHP. The planners and faculty for this program have nothing to disclose. Financial support, in the
form of exhibitor fees, has been solicited for this program and will be fully disclosed prior to the
program.
The Nesbitt School of Pharmacy at Wilkes University is accredited by the Accreditation
Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
