For Community Judges: The Desert Gem 2016
Schedule and Terminology
Step 1 of Judge Registration will ask for your Contact Information.
You will also be asked to check one of the following:
I am a competitor's parent
I am NOT a competitor's parent / I am a community judge
I am an NCFCA/Stoa alumni
Please make sure you check the middle option, letting us know that you are a
community judge.
Step 2 of Judge Registration will ask for your Availability
You can check the box/es next to the round/s when you will judge. (If you are available, you may sign
up for multiple time slots.)
Note: It is not possible to judge consecutive rounds.
Included in the time blocks is the 40 minute training session held before the scheduled round, as
well as the 30 minutes needed after the round to fill out your ballot and enjoy refreshments. The
total time you should allow for training, judging, and completing your ballots for each round is
approximately 3 hours.
For example, if you choose to judge IE Pattern A Round 1 on Friday, January 22nd, your training will begin at
8:45 am, you will be judging from 9:30 am to 11:15am, and you should be able to complete your ballots by
11:45 pm, for a total of 3 hours for that round.
With that in mind, if you are available to judge more than one round on a given day, make sure they are not
consecutive rounds.
Note on Terminology:
"IE" refers to: Speeches, which are divided into three patterns for this tournament ~
Pattern A includes speeches in these categories – Dramatic Interp, Monologue, Motivational, and
Persuasive.
Pattern B includes these speech categories –Expository, Humorous Interp, Mars Hill Impromptu,
and Original Oratory.
Pattern C includes these speech categories - Apologetics, Duo Interp, and Open Interp.
