Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Chapter Constitution
Mission Statement:
The Grand Valley State University Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is a
registered student organization existing under the guidelines set forth by the
university. Our organization falls under the umbrella of Service and Advocacy and
should work closely with GVSU and "Habitat for Humanity" to promote, advocate,
and serve in and outside of the university community.
Through membership in GVSU's chapter of Habitat for Humanity, our
members will actively participate in the building of homes through our affiliate
Habitat for Humanity of Kent County. Therefore, our campus chapter will assist in
fundraising for our affiliate, so that they may continue in their mission of providing
affordable and adequate housing for those in need.
Article One: Membership
Section 1.1 Membership in GVSU Habitat for Humanity is open to all currently
enrolled GVSU students. It is university policy that no person based on age, color,
gender, disability, race, religion, or sexual orientation be discriminated against.
Section 1.2 It is the policy of the university that members of a registered student
organization must hold at least a 2.0 GPA and be in good academic standing.
Section 1.3 There are no membership fees or dues imposed on any members of GVSU
Habitat for Humanity.
Section 1.4 Members must attend at least four events, meetings, or build days
throughout each semester in order to remain an active member of GVSU Habitat for
Humanity. At least two of which should be build days.
Section 1.5 As a member of GVSU Habitat for Humanity, your name will be on a
roster, registered with the Office of Student Life.
Article Two: Executive Board
Section 2.1 The executive board will consist of at least four key members: President,
Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. These positions will be voted on by the
general assembly, and their terms shall continue until the board member resigns,
graduates or is impeached. Executives should attend all meetings. After the second
missed meeting of the semester the position will be under review by the executive
board.
Section 2.2 The responsibilities of the executive board are as follows:
President







Provide general supervision of all chapter activities
Work with other leaders to set chapter goals
Delegate responsibilities to leaders
Coordinate communication between members of leadership team
Help to Plan and implement membership drives
Meet with the organization advisor
Conduct Habitat general assembly meetings
Vice President
 Perform duties of president in his or her absence
 Ensure that all necessary forms and permissions from the campus, city or
county for chapter activities are obtained and documented
 Reserve meeting place for all chapter meetings
 Meet with organization advisor
 Conduct Habitat meetings in absence of president
Secretary






Prepare agendas and facilitate chapter meetings
Prepare, record and email minutes of chapter meetings
Maintain membership roster
Serve as custodian of chapter records
Respond to student/member e-mails
Record volunteer hours of members
Treasurer
 Record funds raised and budget changes
 Attend budget meetings with President and assist in the allocations
process
 Work with Vice President on fundraising opportunities
Section 2.3 Any general member may bring impeachment proceedings against an
executive board officer. An executive board officer may be impeached by a 2/3 vote
of the general assembly.
Section 2.4 GVSU Habitat for Humanity will also have an advisor that will be
involved in overseeing the organization. The advisor will be appointed by the Office
of Student Life and shall serve through the academic year.
Article Three: Elections
Section 3.1 Officers shall be nominated by general assembly member, or another
officer, and shall be elected by a majority vote of the general assembly.
Article Four: Meetings
Section 4.1 General assembly meetings shall be held within the first three weeks of
the new semester and shall take place during the fall and winter semesters.
Section 4.2 General assembly meetings shall be held at least once a month throughout
the fall and winter semesters in order to provide members with up to date information
on events within GVSU Habitat for Humanity and other campus events. This allows
members to actively participate in the opportunities within Habitat for Humanity and
other volunteer organizations.
Section 4.3 Executive board meetings shall take place at an arranged time prior to
general assembly meetings. Executive board meetings may also be called by the
president when needed.
Article Five: Dissolution
Section 5.1 Should GVSU Habitat for Humanity cease to exist, all revenue remaining
in the non-student life account should be donated to Habitat for Humanity of Kent
County.
