By using Chines phonetic system Pinyin, students will develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students will be able to use simple sentences to carry out basic daily conversion. Related culture topics will be included in the course. Goals Chinese words and phrases from Students’ Book Mandarin pronunciation and the four tones Basic sentence structure for conversation Reading and writing the Pinyin system (Romanization system of Chinese language.) Structure of Chinese characters (radical components) Stroke order for writing characters Typing Chinese characters on computer Chinese culture appreciation: geography, people’s livelihood, Chinese food, civilization, pop music, films, traditional games,etc. Materials Teacher will supply: Textbook: Chinese Made Easy Book 1(轻松学汉语) Handouts and other learning materials/aids Students need to prepare: 1 ½- to 2-inch binder for handouts. Loose-leaf writing paper or a spiral notebook for taking notes and write down all kinds of class information. It is important to keep your important papers, worksheets, quizzes, and tests well organized throughout the semester to help you review. Pen or pencil, eraser, (pencil is preferred). One dry erase marker. * If you use teacher supply stationaries, please make sure you put it back to the original place, so other students can use it as well. Grading Scale: A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: 0-50% Weights of Grades: Formative assessments – 40% of the grade Summative assessments – 50% of the grade Participation-10% Formative assessments include but are not limited to: homework, daily participation, and in-class activities. Chinese made easy book 1 2 To establish an effective learning environment, please kindly follow Chinese Classroom Routines and Rules: 1) Show respect to everyone in class and follow the instructions. 2) Be seated when the bell rings. 3) If during the class, you need to get up to do some thing, please finish it as quickly, quietly as possible. 4) Arrange your bathroom visit during the class break. If you need to be excused during the class, please record it on class excuse record sheet. Your leave (reasonably) should be less than 5 minutes. At the end of each semester, students who haven’t used this excuse record sheet will be rewarded. 5) Classroom assignments are supposed to be turned in before class ended. Some are going to be graded according to accuracy; some others can be effort score. 6) Late turn-in assignment will affect your score. Each late day will generally have 10% deduction of your score. 7) For any absent days, you’re expected to make up your work. 8) ACADEMIC HONESTY is highly emphasized. Cheating will result in zero and other severe disciplinary measures. For failing or unsatisfactory grades, with teacher’s permission and extended extra study, you can apply to have it redone with highest 90% of the grade) 9) NO Iphone, Ipod during the class. Every 2 weeks, students will have a Bi-week formative performance score (1.5/day). Unauthorized usage of these devices will affective your score. 10) Without teacher’s permission, students found to do other work unrelated to Chinese, after receive warnings may risks having the materials taken away by the teacher.
