As a Visiting Lecturer you must be aware of our safety requirements and emergency arrangements and you should receive a Health & Safety Induction on appointment. If this has not happened you MUST request this from the Faculty or Business School responsible for your appointment. This Code of Practice is designed to support the Induction and to remind you of your responsibilities. Fire Safety As part of your Induction you MUST complete the York St John Fire Safety Training – accessible online at http://www.yorksj.ac.uk/health-and-safety/health-and-safety/fire- safety-at-york-st-john.aspx This covers the essentials on Fire Safety at the University and all visiting lecturers will need to make themselves aware of the fire evacuation procedures applying to the area where they will normally be working or teaching. This will include: The fire alarm system (e.g. siren) and how to raise the alarm The nearest means of escape route and fire exit The alternative means of escape route and fire exit The locations and use of safe refuges for students and staff with mobility issues (found on all floors above ground level) The procedures for evacuation The location of the Lord Mayor’s Walk fire assembly point If you are teaching when the alarm sounds, it is your responsibility to immediately guide your students to safety and take them to the Assembly Point on the Front Lawns next to Lord Mayor’s Walk. Keep your students together and await further instruction. Health and Safety information All visiting lecturers will need to make themselves aware of: where to obtain any School or Faculty specific Health and Safety information; to whom they should report any Health and Safety concerns. Risk assessment On the instruction of the Business School or Faculty all visiting lecturers may need to make themselves aware of any local or specific risk assessments and control measures relating to the locations where they will be working. They may also be required to produce their own risk assessments for the activities that they will be conducting. 1 The University Health, safety & Wellbeing Policy and our procedures All visiting teaching staff will need to make themselves aware of relevant Health Safety & Wellbeing information which can be viewed and downloaded from: http://www.yorksj.ac.uk/health-and-safety/health-and-safety.aspx It is Mandatory for you to be fully aware of The University Health Safety & Wellbeing Policy Emergency Fire & Accident procedures and how to obtain First Aid.
