Lisa Meeks-VPK 3 -Newsletter – September 30TH, 2013 REMINDERS: I will be visiting family in Wisconsin from Thursday, October 3rd thru Friday, October 11th. I will be returning to the class on Monday, October 14th. Miss Sam will be the lead while I am away. We are planning 3 field trips for the month of October. Tentatively, we are looking at October 16th, to go Hiking (Letter H), as well as, eating Taco’s and Ice Cream at Moe’s for lunch and dessert (T and I). We are also looking to go to Green Meadow’s Farm in Kissimmee on October 23rd to support our farm unit. In addition, we will be attending a school wide field trip to Hibiscus Courts, on October 30th, where students can wear their Halloween costumes and go Trick or Treating thru the Senior Care center. Stay tuned for details. In our early literacy groups, we will begin working on the farm unit. We will explore toy barns and farm animals and work on a 24 piece farm floor puzzle, cooperatively. We will create a barn on paper, using craft sticks and paint it any color we want. We will practice initial consonant sounds, using letters “P” and “C”, by playing a “Pigs in Paradise” game. We will read a supplemental book on horses and sequence toy horses in a graduated series, from smallest to biggest. These activities will help teach your child information about the different types of animals on the farm, as well as their characteristics. The activities will also help your child begin to learn the difference of the animals that live on the farm versus the zoo, or the jungle. While at home or in the community, you can: read books about farm animals, look for cows or horses as you drive through the community, discuss what foods we get from farm animals, etc. As you play with farm animals with your child, you can work on patterning animals (horse, pig, horse, pig, etc), colors of the animals, as well as, the sounds the animals make. In our cognitive learning groups, we will begin reading about and learning the letter “E”. We will create extraordinary eggs, using ovals, tissue paper and water. We will draw a picture of elves and dictate a story about them. We will create an elephant on paper plates We will match Easter Bunny numerals to the appropriate amount of objects on an Easter Egg. While out in the community or at home, you can look for things that begin with the letter “E”, and practice the sound of “E” (Eh or Eee-Egg or Eagle). In addition, as you read to your child you can point out the “E” words in the story. When you go to a restaurant, point out different “E” words that may be in the menu (Eggs, Enchiladas). In our handwriting groups, we will also focus on the correct writing for letter “E”, with our starting place (top) and sequence (Big line down, Jump to the Top, Little line across the Top, Little Line across the Middle, Little Line across the Bottom). We will sequence the letters in our first and/or last name, build the letter with our wooden pieces, and trace/copy the letter “E”. We will use our play-do, to roll out 1 Big line and 3 Little lines, to create the letter, as well as, trace/copy the letter from a written model. We will deposit coins and buttons in piggy banks and tootsie roll containers. We will use slate boards to write the letter “E”, using our Wet, Dry, Try technique. We will Wet the letter, with a small piece of sponge, Dry the letter, with a small piece of paper towel, and, Try the letter with a small piece of chalk. We will learn the correct writing for lower-case “e”. We will peel stickers on our paper, choose a word that begins with “E”, copy the word from a written model, then, draw a picture related to the word we chose. While at home or in the community, you can practice writing the letter “E” in sand, shaving cream, or rice. You can also provide a variety of tools, such as markers, pencils, pens, paint brushes, etc. for them to use. Finally, you can also use pipe cleaners, craft sticks or straws to build the letter, as well as, roll play-do out to form the letter. Thank You----- Miss Lisa’s Team
