Asbestos
A list of disposal locations is provided as a guide only. You should always telephone
beforehand to check that the site you intend using is still accepting asbestos. For handling and
disposal requirements refer to the EPA Guidelines for Removal, Transport & Disposal of
Asbestos.
Batteries
Battery World outlets accept most types of batteries (see attached list). Some can and bottle
depots will also take them. A list of places that take used lead acid batteries – the type found

Electrical & electronic
items
Some Councils accept these items at their waste facilities. Scrap metal dealers may also take
some items. Search for companies that recycle end-of-life electrical and electronic goods on
the Planet Ark website at: : http://recyclingnearyou.com.au/

Ask about ChemClear collections in your Council area or adjacent locations.
Fire Extinguishers
Most empty fire extinguishers can be recharged or taken to a scrap metal recycler. Yellow
BCF fire extinguishers are banned in South Australia and must be disposed of at the
Household Hazardous Waste Depot at Dry Creek. Refer to map below for location and
opening times.
Kwik Gas Cylinder Exchange Service
This is a national cylinder swap service, where you swap your empty cylinder for a new or
refurbished filled one. Retail locations are across Australia in selected service stations such as
Quix and Mobil outlets, Bunnings Warehouse and others including caravan parks and
convenience stores.

Glasses (sight)
Household poisons
Recycle for Sight - Lions Clubs International collect eyeglasses through their 'Recycle for Sight'
program. Australians can donate their glasses, which are then given to people in developing
countries.
OneSight - Drop off your unwanted reading glasses and sunglasses, either broken or intact to
any OPSM, Laubman & Pank or Budget Eyewear stores across Australia. Your glasses are then
distributed worldwide to charities helping developing communities.
Zero Waste periodically conducts Household Hazardous Waste collections in conjunction with
local Councils. The collection schedule may be viewed at:
http://www.zerowaste.sa.gov.au/at-home/hazardous-waste/household-hazardous-wastedrop-off-timetables. Alternatively, they can be dropped off at the Household Hazardous
Waste Depot, Dry Creek (see map below).
SA householders can simply drop of their end-of life globes (including: Compact fluorescent
lamps (CFLs), Fluorescent tubes, Incandescent globes and Halogen lamps, tubes and bulbs) at
the checkout counter of any Mitre 10 or True Value hardware stores.

Medicines
Return Unwanted Medicines (RUM) project is a national scheme for out-of-date and
unwanted medicines. This scheme urges Australians to discard their medicines in a
responsible manner. The returned medicines are then disposed of safely. They are in no way

reused or recycled.
You can take your out-of-date and unwanted medicines to any pharmacy in Australia. All
pharmacies are equipped to accept all medicines.

Motor oil, oil filters &
coolants
Check whether sump oil, filters & coolants are accepted at Council waste facilities.
Paint
Printer cartridges
If dried and hardened remove the paint from its container, wrap and place in the refuse bin.
The empty paint tin can go in the recycling bin.
Liquid water-based paints can be solidified for easy disposal with the use of a hardener that
can be purchased at hardware stores.

Sharps/syringes
The Needle Clean Up Hotline (1300 131 340) provides information about removing discarded
needles and syringes from public places. Some pharmacies will accept used syringes. Sharps
disposal bins are installed in some Council facilities.
