Dear Parent/Carer
GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY – CAMERA REQUIREMENTS
As you are aware your child has chosen to study GCSE Photography from September
2015. The study of this course will require students to take photographs outside of
lessons and though this can be done on any camera it would be useful for students to
have a camera of their own that they can use both in and out of lessons.
In lessons students will have access to a Canon EOS 1200D Digital SLR camera
however they will not be able to take this equipment home. It would be advantageous
for students to have their own camera that they can bring in to lessons. There is no
need to buy anything as complex or expensive as a Digital SLR. A bridge camera in
the £100-200 price range such as the Canon PowerShot SX520 would be more than
adequate. If you would rather buy a different camera for your child to use you are
more than welcome to do so as long as you are happy for it to be brought to school
for use in lessons. Please however ensure it meets the basic specification outlined
below. The school provides lockers for students and any camera brought to school
should be securely stored by students in lockers or the lockable cupboard provided in
the Art Department for this purpose. We would advise that parents ensure that
personal possessions are adequately insured.
Minimum spec of Camera
The camera must have the capacity to shoot in the following modes:



Manual
Aperture Priority
Shutter Priority
It should also use a standard 2GB/4GB SDHC or SD memory card (size 3cm x 2.2cm)
as we will use these to transfer images from the camera onto the school computers. If
their camera uses a different sized card, students will need to bring in their own camera
cable or a memory card adapter.
Please note that it is not a requirement of the course to buy a camera, school
equipment will be provided for lessons. If you have any questions please to do hesitate
to contact myself or Mrs Hoskin at the school.
Yours sincerely
Claire Gemmell
