Adult Education Transition Specialist Full-Time
EDUCATION & EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor degree in Education, Psychology or a field of study related to area of
assignment AND 1 year of academic advising experience; OR, 2 years of equivalent
experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have
been achieved.
RESPONSIBILITIES:












Acts as counselor to students in relation to goals, success, employment and higher
education opportunities.
Utilizes a case management approach to link local services to Adult Education
Students.
Coordinates with community agencies and employment opportunities in effort to
assist students.
Works with Adult Education faculty to set goals and achieve success for students.
Performs career assessments.
Works with participants to obtain scholarship, grants, student loans and
employment after GED completion.
Teaches academic classes and tutors on as needed basis.
Assists with professional development of classroom faculty.
Acts as liaison with Columbus Technical College admission office.
Maintains complete and accurate records of program and prepares necessary
reports.
Maintains student database through GALIS management system.
Displays a high level of effort and commitment to performing work; operates
effectively within the organizational structure; demonstrates trustworthiness and
responsible behavior.

Job Description
The Columbus Technical College Adult Education Program is seeking highly qualified candidates for
our Transitions Program Specialist position.
Purpose:
The Transitions Program Specialist interviews and advises adult basic education and English language
learner students regarding information, procedures and academic requirements for admission into
colleges/universities along with support for life skills needed for student success. The person will
ensure students are provided a continuum of services to span adult education instruction to GED
graduation to post secondary education and the workforce. He/she will assist students in exploring
careers, evaluating academic abilities, and setting goals. This individual will provide resources such as
student information packets, transition guides and recruitment materials. Additionally, they will
present academic information to orientation groups and potential students and parents.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Lead the development and implementation of the local Transitions Program Plan for all
counties in the service delivery area.
 Assess and advise students on academic and career issues; identify the educational and career
options appropriate for each student and assist with the analysis of each option, including
possible outcomes and their implications (e.g. Accelerated Pathways (Fast Track/Boot
Camp), Dual Enrollment, WorkReady Certification).
 Serve as a liaison between the adult education program, postsecondary education, Workforce
Investment Boards (WIBs) and community service agencies to provide integrated education
and training services (e.g. college tours, job fairs, mentoring, job coaching).
 Provide training and support to staff members on the integration of the Career Awareness
curricula and workplace skills; develops transition materials and resources.
 In collaboration with instructional staff track student's progress for academic, career, and
personal growth.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 Knowledge of adult learning theory.
 Knowledge of college entrance requirements and culture.
 Skill in interviewing and advising.
 Skill in public relations/marketing and/or community outreach.
 Ability to travel within/across Service Delivery Area (SDA).
