In.P.A.C.T. Workbook; Natural Skin Support for Animals.
Background; Welcome to this workbook which is one of the range of InP/ACT resources from
Essentials for Equilibrium. InP/ACT is an acronym for Individual Person/Animal Centred Therapies.
These workbooks all aim to bring you information to help you focus on the needs of yourself (ie
‘Person’) or your animal companion. They are written in such a way to support you as a learner to
identify the needs you want to target, and then learn about a number of possible ways to support an
improved state of wellbeing. It is hoped that by learning in this way, you are able to understand and
then apply the methods which are best suited to your needs, thus giving you the sense of control
and autonomy in the healing journey.
This workbook is the result of many years’ experience of working with animals (and people),
including those with very complex emotional and physical needs. I have shared all of my knowledge
on this subject, with the loving intention that it can be of help to anyone who needs it. I hope you
enjoy using this workbook and find it both easy to use, and enlightening to further draw your
interest on natural health and healing.
I hope that you enjoy learning through this workbook, its contents and the practical
experiences you have with your animals, since it is my belief ‘What you learn with
pleasure you remember forever’
Healing, health and wellbeing can be studied on many levels. As a Nurse I personally like to know
there is some science behind what I use for my own health and for the health of those that I love, so
ensure as far as possible that the remedies I use have been tried and tested. As a spiritual person
and complementary therapist, I believe that we cannot always explain an illness in physical terms, so
science cannot always provide a ‘cure’, but that there is generally something out there in nature
which will help each of us on our journey to wellness. I hope you find here some useful hints, tips
and ideas for your journey. I will only recommend methods and products that I use myself, for my
family and animal companions, and all information is given to the best of my ability and knowledge.
The trend of using complementary therapies alongside allopathic medicine is growing, so I hope this
helps you to develop your understanding and ability to use some amazing natural healing methods
for yourself and your animal companions.
I am keen to share this information about holistic animal health as far and wide as possible; this
includes to us humans too!! The remedies which are discussed here for animals are also useful for
people. You will be able to use the knowledge here to help yourself and your nearest and dearest
too. This workbook is intended to help you to support your animal companions and yourself to
better health and wellbeing. However, it does not entitle any reader to become an animal or human
therapist; for this to happen you must undertake the relevant professional training.

A few words about the law;
In the UK, which is where I work and teach, we must be aware of the Veterinary Act
1966, which states that only qualified veterinary surgeons can diagnose and medially or
surgically treat animals. Animal owners can carry out minor medical treatment, in accordance with
this legislation. Therefore, I am able to teach you how to use natural therapies with your animals,
and you are able to use them on your own animals within the scope of this law, but you may not
claim to be an animal therapist and offer treatments unless you are a qualified veterinary surgeon.
(for more information, please see www.rcvs.org.uk , the web site of the Royal College of Veterinary
Surgeons)
The Animal Welfare Act 2006 identifies five key aspects that owners must meet for the welfare of
their animals, these are;
A suitable environment (ie how the animal is housed)
A suitable diet (ie what is provided for it to eat and drink)
The ability to exhibit normal behaviour patterns
Any need it has to be housed with or apart from other animals
Protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
I believe that the techniques, principals and methods which will be discussed, described and
demonstrated within this workbook can help you to meet a number of these key aspects of animal
welfare, along with veterinary care and good general care and support of every animal.
If you are using this workbook outside of the UK, please ensure you are aware of the legislation
within your own country.
I have been teaching people both ‘face to face’ and via distance learning for many years, as a Health
and Social Care tutor, assessor and quality assurer, as well as in my role as a complementary therapy
tutor and Reiki Master/ Teacher. I have learned much over the years about how we all learn, and the
biggest lesson for me is that we are all different! Some of us are visual learners, who like to read and
see the task in action in order to understand. Some of us are auditory learners, meaning we like to
hear about the task, listening to others speak and describing the task in words. Others are
kinaesthetic learners, meaning they like to actually do the task in order to understand it.
I want every learner to be able to understand and use the information I will be sharing here, so I
have given much consideration to how the information is presented and shared with you.

The written word. Throughout this workbook, you will be presented with the
information in its written format, I hope my writing style makes the subject easy to
understand and very interesting! Where relevant, you will have references and
recommended reading so that you can check out what I am telling you, and add to
your learning further. When you see this image, you will know there is
recommended reading material.
Inspired by; “If there's a book you want to read, but hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.”
― Toni Morrison, I have written this workbook as I know so many people and animals will benefit
from its contents.
Opportunities for you to personalise and interact with this learning. This workbook
aims to be very interactive so that you can learn and grow with it as much as possible,
therefore there are several sections for you to complete. I recommend that you firstly
read the whole thing front to back, then go through it again taking more time and filling in the boxes
as you go, you will see the pen symbol wherever you can fill in your own answers. You can then use
your answers to help form your Action Plan at the end, and ultimately put what you have learned
into action!! If you are using an online version of the workbook, you may prefer to have a note book
to hand specifically for the purpose of writing your answers for the workbook questions in.
Suggested recipes. You will also be able to put into practice many of the
recommendations made here, which will help you to learn and understand the
principles. Additionally, you have a number of recipes to try out; again, by using these,
your learning and understanding will be enhanced. Whenever you see this image, you
will know there is a recommended recipe.
Consider the findings of research. As stated earlier, I like to underpin my own knowledge
and understanding with research wherever possible, and I am happy to state that there is
much research into the techniques, methods and remedies described here. I have selected
some research findings to share here, and whenever you see this image, you will know
there are details of research. However, the use of research findings is no claim to prove a
remedy or approach will definitely work for everyone! Research findings report on the individuals’
experiences in that study, and although these findings can be very useful to be aware of, please
remember we are all individuals and so what worked for one person / animal or group, may not work
in the same way for us. My intention here is to share information from research to support your
learning.
The sharing of experiences from others via testimonials. This image shows you that
there is a testimonial from someone to share their experience of the method
described. I like to include testimonials from others wherever possible so you can

hear directly from the animal caretakers about how their animal(s) have benefitted. However, any
testimonials used here are to illustrate how animals have responded in their particular instance. They
can never be used to guarantee how any other animals may respond; just as we are all individuals so
are animals. What has worked well for one may not for another! I can never make claims that these
methods are ‘miracle cures’ but what I can share is the experience of others to try and illustrate
possible responses from animals to these types of natural approaches.
Examples and Case studies; we are often inspired by hearing the stories of others,
so in places throughout this workbook you will be able to read about animals and
how they use these remedies. You will be encouraged to consider how and why
they may benefit from these remedies, to help enhance your understanding.
Visual and audio aids to enhance your learning. To help you see and hear what I
am writing about, there are a number of videos which I have created to illustrate
the workbooks. These are posted on you tube; some of them are for general
viewing so everyone can see them, but some are intended solely for my learners, so
you will be given privileged access to these videos. Whenever you see the image
here, you will know there is a video that you can view to further enhance your
learning. My You tube page is called……., and this is where all videos that are for ‘public’ use are
stored. Some of these will be used to illustrate points within this course. The others which have been
specially created for my learners are only available to those who have access to the codes which I
will share in this workbook. You will need to add these to your search engine or search them in you
tube and they will be shown on your screen.
Tutor support. Tutor support is also available via email. If at any point during
your course, you are unsure of anything, please do drop me an email and I will
get back to you as soon as I can. In your email, please ensure you tell me your
name and which workbook you are using, and identify the question that you
have.
Food for thought. I hope that much of what you will learn here will be thought
provoking! I have added boxes throughout the workbook with information which may
help you to focus your thoughts, consider some interesting theories, or reflect on the
behaviour of your animal companions in some way.

Learning Outcomes;
Students using this workbook will be supported
to meet the following learning outcomes;
 To understand the concept of holistic
health and wellbeing, and how it can be
applied to animals with pain and injuries.
 To understand aspects of our lifestyles
which may have an impact on the
wellbeing of our animals, with particular
reference to their physical and emotional
wellbeing.
 To understand the theory and use of Applied Zoopharmacognosy in animal wellbeing, with
particular reference to issues around skin health (Applied Zoopharmacognosy is a
behavioural science concerned with the use of natural remedies by animals with a selfselection model). Learners will be equipped with the information to be able to facilitate this
model with their own animals.
 To understand the application of magnotherapy and how it may help animals who
experience skin problems.
 To understand the theory and application of Bio Energy Healing in animal wellbeing, and the
benefits of using it with animals who have skin problems (Bio Energy Healing is concerned
with the subtle energy fields we all possess, one system of this healing which many people
are familiar with is Reiki). Learners will be equipped with the information to be able to use
this healing method with their own animals.
 To understand how your animals communicate with you and how you can improve further
your communication with them.
 Learners will be able to plan actions to support their animal companions towards better
wellbeing using their chosen methods from within the workbook, and will be given tools to
use for this and recording methods to reflect on the results effective
Please remember that all symptoms of illness in your animal companion(s) of whatever nature need to be evaluated,
diagnosed and have treatment recommended by a Veterinarian. If you intend to use this workbook for self-help it is
important that you do so only in conjunction with duly prescribed therapy. Essentials for Equilibrium makes no

Introduction;
Animals bring us so much in terms of unconditional acceptance, love and loyalty. It is well known
now that the benefits experienced by humans due to the companionship of animals are immense.
Our wellbeing in terms of physical, emotional, mental and physical aspects can benefit so much from
having animals in our lives. As caretakers, we can reciprocate this for them and, I hope, by
supporting them using these methods, along with conventional methods, bring them the best we
possibly can to enhance their feeling of wellbeing and life experiences.
Take a few moments now to reflect on what having your animal companion (s) in your life means to
you;
What would you like to bring to their life?
This workbook aims to help us recognise the skin problems our animals
experience, and to help them to overcome them in the best way for your
particular animal(s). Just as no two people or animals are identical, there
are always going to be variations in how we help animals with the same
problem; for example, I can be asked to help two dogs with itchy skin. On the surface it may appear
that as they have the same problem, the remedies/ approaches may be the same. However, when I
work with the owners it may turn out that one of the dogs has an allergy which affects his skin
making it dry and itchy . The other dog may have anxiety issues when he is left by his owners, which
manifests partly in his behaviour but also partly due to the stress he experiences, causes his skin to
be itchy.
Just as these two cases are different, so will the remedies possibly be different; the history and
genetics of each animal will vary and so possibly will the remedies needed.

Equilibrium. Please note this does not replace the need for veterinary support. For further
information, please go to www.animalhealthefe.com/leigh@aninalhealthefe.com
Page 9
Genetics cannot be changed using these methods; if an animal has inherited a skin condition/allergy,
we cannot undo that, but we can help to alleviate some of the symptoms he or she experiences to
help them be more comfortable.
Please do not feel that you have to use every method taught here......the reason there is so much
information is that for each issue there are many possible ways to help, and I don’t want to leave
anything out!!! What works for one may not work for another, so listen to your intuition when
reading...if something doesn’t resonate well with you, leave it for ‘reserve’, and first try the
methods that feel more appropriate to you and for your animal companion.....you know them
best!!!

The Holistic Approach;
Many people now recognise the importance in all aspects of life to look at things from a holistic
perspective. As a conventional Nurse, with over 18 years post qualifying experience, I can say that in
my opinion, although Medicine has much to offer us in terms of treating illness, at times we need
more to help us stay healthy and well. Many of us have traditionally left our health to ‘luck’ and
relied upon medicine to put us right after something has gone wrong. At times it cannot be any
other way, and severe illness can strike out of the blue with no obvious cause, but at other times it is
clear that an illness has evolved in us over a period of time, often due to lifestyle choices. Just as this
is the case for people, it is the same for our animals.
The holistic approach encourages us to look at ourselves/ the animals in a wider
perspective than simply a body. Our minds and spirits are affected on a daily
basis, and this can have an impact on our bodies. This is a difficult concept at
first to grasp, but here is an example of how our mind, body and spirit can be
affected by health or the lack of it.
Sahara is a horse with sweet itch; her owners have tried several medicines to
help ease her symptoms but none have worked; throughout Spring and
Summer she is kept in her stable as much as possible, and can only have short
periods out to graze and exercise. Due to the time constraints of her human companions, these
don’t happen very often. She loves to be outside, so when this is curtailed, she begins to feel bored
in the stable and because her energy levels remain high, she sometimes gets into mischief, just to
burn off some energy (she is a specialist at opening the stable door !!)
Her allergy makes her feel low sometimes, she always wants to scratch, and
her skin gets very sore . The itch keeps her awake when she is trying to sleep;
she is woken by an itchy feeling somewhere, and the scratching gets so bad
sometimes that she opens up wounds on her skin, which are painful and often
get infected.
Her humans are at a loss and wonder whether they can keep and care for her as they feel they have
tried all options with little success.
In the holistic approach, her humans would be encouraged to take a look at how they can help her
to feel better. Issues around her mind, body and spirit would all be considered, perhaps in the
following way;
Mind
Sahara has suffered from frustration, depression, and an under stimulated mind at
times due to her allergy. She may benefit from some distractions to keep her mind
active and engaged at the times she is bored; interactive toys in the stable may help
her use her energy in a fun way, and may distract her from itching so much.
Peppermint essential oil is often selected by horses and can help keep their minds
stimulated when in the stable.

Page 11
Body
She may benefit from using essential oils, herbs or other natural therapies to help ease
her symptoms, as many other sufferers report positive results from these and other
therapies. She may also benefit from dietary changes and supplements to strengthen
her immune system, so that perhaps she is better equipped to deal with the problem
and not suffer so many symptoms. Essential oils may help soothe her skin and boost
healing, but will also deter the midge which causes the allergy, as well as deterring
other insect pests.
Spirit
Sahara may be helped to feel better on a spiritual level with the use of essential oils,
herbs, hands on healing and other methods which help to soothe her.
Emotions
Sahara’s emotions may be supported by her choice of essential oils, these would help
her to feel more secure and settled, soothing her nerves and helping her release the
fear she was holding. She may also benefit from bio energy healing.
Holism recognises we all have our own way of healing, so Sheba’s humans must find the treatments
and approaches that suit her, and use them consistently . The holistic approach does not rule out
conventional medicine, it recognises there is a place for all types of healing and that they can often
work together in harmony for the benefit of the individual. This approach enables the individuals to
feel more in control of his or her animal companion’s health, and encourages a more proactive
approach about maintaining wellbeing rather than a reactive approach of dealing with an illness
once it has manifested itself.
Do you feel you understand the concept of Holism? You may have personal examples from
your own life which you worked holistically on. If you are not sure about this concept yet,
think for a minute of a time when you had a physical problem, it may have been a pain, or a
condition causing an inability to join in certain activities.
What did it make you feel like? Were you bored, frustrated, tearful?
How did your body feel? Were you uncomfortable? Was it difficult to sit down, stand up, and sleep?

Equilibrium. Please note this does not replace the need for veterinary support. For further
information, please go to www.animalhealthefe.com/leigh@aninalhealthefe.com
Page 12
Did you wonder why it had happened to you? Did you feel you didn’t deserve the illness/ condition?
All of these feelings add up to a holistic experience. In allopathic medicine, you probably would have
been treated for any pain, infection and other physical symptoms, and perhaps for any depression you
experienced, all of which are very valuable treatments. You would very probably not be helped with
the emotional/ spiritual aspects of your illness, the ‘why me’ feelings. Complementary therapies can
often help people and animals with all aspects of an illness or issue. They can integrate with allopathic
medicine to help with the ‘gaps’ so that you and your animals can improve the ways you aim to restore
wellness.
An illustration of how holism works for animals….’ANIMAL MAGIC’
I'd like to share my story, with anyone out there, who has an animal, distressed,
miserable and unwell. Let me tell you about Micky Frame. He was found by a
neighbour’s relative, he had been thrown onto a motorway, he was under 3 months old, welt marks
all over his tiny, emaciated body, he was also completely baldy. I first set eyes on him, when he was
held in a neighbours arms, she told me that she had been knocking on peoples doors, asking if
anyone would take him in. They had all commented on his appearance, and pointed out that he was
too ugly! (ugly people inside and out.....obviously! ). I took him out of the neighbour’s arms, and took
him home. I visited the vet, who told me, that he wouldn't survive much longer, and to take him
home and let him die. I took him home, but not to di, Micky is made of tougher stuff! He is now 8
years old, and he suffers from a horrific skin condition, Hyper-plastic dermatitis. Over the years, I've
tried everything, to keep his skin comfortable, it's been an uphill battle. That was about to change,
when I was given the name of Leigh Smyth......
I was in two minds about the service, she offered, telling myself that I'd tried herbs, aromatherapy
etc. I decided on booking her to visit Micky, and that visit has changed Micky’s life, and mine. Leigh
studied Micky’s past and present, noticed things about him that no one else had. Micky had been
battered and bruised inside, by the trauma and abuse he had suffered, Leigh explained feelings lie
deep in animals, and need to be healed, and told me that animals know oils that they need. Leigh
then began to offer Micky different oils. He then proceeded to pick out his own remedies, and I
couldn't believe my eyes! If I had ever tried anything, he never seemed to want it, here he was
happy as can be, around this doctor Dolittle character, Leigh. That is the only way I can describe, the
scene I was looking at, my cat Mr Merlin was pushing Micky out of the way, and Micky refused to
budge. Since Leigh’s magical visit, Micky sleeps peacefully, his tail wags all the time, and he isn't
going for(attacking) dogs outside, like he used to. He used to be very aggressive, due to fear. His
steroid intake has also been lowered considerably; the list of changes is endless, because I keep
noticing positive changes on a daily basis. My message to all animal owners out there, that have pets

who have problems and have tried everything, and still see no joy, then get in touch with
leigh@essentialsforequilibrium.co.uk and find the answers to your animals problems.
Annie Frame (Micky Frame and Mr Merlin’s owner)
Micky’s case is used as an example here because it shows how the use of these natural remedies
(which you will learn much more about later on in this workbook!) helped him in a holistic way. His
physical symptoms appeared to reduce significantly, which had an impact on other areas of his life;
he began to sleep soundly, something which he had never done. This suggests that his body was no
longer causing him the discomfort that would wake him from his sleep. Annie reported that he
started wagging his tail to show his improved emotional state, and that his previous aggression
towards other dogs had also subsided, showing his improved mental wellbeing. Annie’s description
suggests Micky has a better sense of peace, perhaps indicating that his spiritual wellbeing was also
improved.
Whenever we work in a holistic way, for example using the methods of applied zoopharmacognosy
or bio energy healing, both of which you will learn about in this course, we know that the animal or
person will benefit in more than one way. This is the essence of the holistic approach, to support
wellbeing in as many areas of the animal’s life as possible.
