WASHINGTON NATIVE PLANT SOCIETY NATIVE PLANT STEWARD POSITION DESCRIPTION For more information about the WNPS Stewardship Program www.wnps.org/npsp/KC POSITION: Washington Native Plant Society Native Plant Steward REPORTS TO: WNPS Stewardship Coordinator and respective host Volunteer Coordinator of partners from Kenmore, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Sammamish, SeaTac and King County LOCATION: Cities of Kenmore, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Sammamish and SeaTac and surrounding areas of east and south King County POSITION TYPE: Volunteer, 100 volunteer hours within at least two-year term of service; 75 hours to GSP team project and 25 hours to individual WNPS elective activities and events. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Stewards will work in teams to lead volunteer restoration work in a forested parkland, wetland, shoreline or riparian setting to bringing together the needed community volunteers, materials, technical knowledge, and other resources to make on-the-ground ecological restoration a reality. Steward teams will restore a designated site through an annual restoration cycle with assistance from community volunteers or may be will be assigned to a special restoration related project. Stewards apply best management practices to work independently to complete a site assessment, prepare site plans and tasks to remove invasive plants, install native plants, and conduct site maintenance and monitoring with the help of community volunteers. Steward teams are encouraged to form or work with “Friends of” or “Adopt a Park” groups. SPECIFIC DUTIES: Coordinate work activities with respective Volunteer Coordinators Develop site annual restoration work plan for your site Coordinate volunteer forest restoration events and activities in your assigned restoration site Manage event and material requests, sign-in sheets, and work tasks Complete annual site inventory and monitoring Attend training events for ongoing personal development Page 1 of 2 1/17/2014 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Attend 100 hour WNPS Stewardship Training Complete 75 volunteer hours for team project and 25 volunteer hours for WNPS activities and events Coordinate and lead at least 4 volunteer events per year (of any size) Ability to maintain a positive working relationship with team, staff, volunteers and community supporters Ability to organize and manage diverse activities and set priorities; flexible under pressure Ability to work under physically-demanding conditions, including cold and wet weather DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Desire to restore forest, wetland, shoreline and riparian ecosystems in neighborhood parks and natural areas Willingness to learn ecological restoration best management practices taught by local experts Willingness to work with youth, young adults and adult volunteers in an environmental education setting Good organizational and basic computer skills Contact: Joy Wood, WNPS Stewardship Coordinator npsp@wnps.org or 206-963-5704 The Native Plant Stewardship Program is an education project of the Washington Native Plant Society's Central Puget Sound Chapter and is made possible by funding from the partner cities of Kirkland, Mercer Island, Sammamish, SeaTac and King County Parks, King Conservation District and the WNPS Central Puget Sound Chapter.
