1. mineral – a solid object found in nature that has never been alive
2. hardness – the measure of how difficult it is for a mineral to be scratched
3. rock – a naturally formed solid made of grains of one or more minerals

5. metamorphic rock – rock that has been changed by heat or pressure
6. sedimentary rock – rock made when materials settle into layers and get squeezed until they harden into rock
7. igneous rock – rock that was once melted and then cooled and hardened
8. rock cycle – an endless process in which rocks are changed from one type to another
9. humus – the part of soil made up of broken-down pieces of dead plants and animals
10. sand – soil with grains of rocks that you can see with your eyes alone
