FROM GUATEMALA WITH SOUL:
Gaby Moreno Continues the Latin Diva Series at the National Hispanic Cultural Center
ALBUQUERQUE, NM. 10/13/15. Latin Grammy award-winning artist Gaby Moreno will
perform at the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Saturday, November 21 at 7:30 PM in the
Albuquerque Journal Theatre. Tickets are $12, $17, and $22, with a $2 discount for students,
seniors, and NHCC members, and are available from the NHCC Box Office, at (505) 724-4771,
or at www.nhccnm.org. The event, part of the Center’s Chispa: Latino Music Season and the 21st
performance in the signature Latin Diva Series, is presented in partnership with Avokado Artists.
Born and raised in Guatemala, and now calling Los Angeles home, singer/songwriter Gaby
Moreno was captivated in her youth by the sounds of the blues, soul, and jazz—“I heard an
African American woman singing on the street in New York City when I was younger. I just
froze. When I asked her what she called that music, she looked at me and said, ‘That’s the blues,
honey.’” Her affinity for vintage African American sounds of the 1920s, ‘30s. and ‘40s has led
her to combine them with the Latin American music she loves from the same era.
Moreno’s song “Escondidos” was selected as Song of the Year in the Latin category of the John
Lennon Songwriting Contest in 2006, and she was awarded the Latin Grammy for Best New
Artist in 2013. Her albums, mixing Spanish and English vocals in elegant harmonies and also
incorporating elements of folk, R&B, and vintage rock, include Still the Unknown (2008),
Illustrated Songs (2011), and Postales (2012).
Her performance at ¡Globalquerque!: New Mexico’s Annual Celebration of World Music and
Culture at the NHCC in 2014 was a highlight of the festival, and she has toured recently with
Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Band and as a special guest with the band Calexico.
The National Hispanic Cultural Center is dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and
advancement of Hispanic culture, arts, and humanities, and is a division of the New Mexico
Department of Cultural Affairs.
