2nd Grade Week of: August 31st –September 4th Word Study Spelling Pattern: Short Vowels a, e, i, o, u (REVIEW) We will continue with short vowels this week. We will review all of the short vowel words that we have learned. Students will practice the words in class by participating in word study games and activities. Spelling homework will look a little different this week. Students should complete the assigned homework page each night. The cumulative short vowel word study assessment will be given this Friday. Quiz Date: Friday, September 4th iRead/AR Our county adopted a computer-based reading program last Reading/Language Reading Focus Skill: Main Idea Weekly Story: “How Chipmunk Got His Stripes” This week we will read the folktale: How Chipmunk Got His Stripes. While we read, we focus on answering the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where and why). Students will also learn and use vocabulary words associated with the story. There will be a vocabulary/ comprehension test over the story, focus skill and vocab. words on Friday. ELA Focus Skill: Verbs In language, we will be learning about verbs. Some of this will be a review from 1st grade. We will discuss presenttense vs. past-tense, and practice making regular verbs past-tense. Ex: Jump/Jumped; Kick/Kicked, Laugh/Laughed nd year called iRead. All 2 grade students have the opportunity to interact with the program each day in class. Students have all completed the iRead screener and are now working in the Vocabulary Words program. AR goals have been set! Please take the time to read with your child at home!
