Welcome to Health Science I. Let me start by saying this is a challenging, fast paced course. Many of you are making decisions about your career choices, and I am happy to be a part of that process. I will help you in any way possible, and/or provide resources to help you with your decisions. But first, you must understand the seriousness of the course work and commit yourself to the work in order to benefit the most from this class. This is a fun and interesting class, but only if students follow the rules. Attendance is very important because each day builds on the previous days work. Even if you miss only a day, you must be quick to complete make up work so as to not fall behind. You must act as a mature individual during class. This is not a ‘gotcha’ class where I try to catch you getting in trouble. This is a class that has lots of instructional information, fun activities we can do, and interesting material. I want to use my time and your time in this class to make a great experience for all involved. Failure to comply with class rules will result in: 1st offense- phone call or email to parent 2nd offense-separation from class 3rd offense – written administrative referral Subsequent courses to this class are Health Science II and Nursing Fundamentals. Health Science II is a prerequisite to Nursing Fundamentals. Nursing Fundamentals has the Certified Nurse’s Aide component attached and includes clinical time in a long term facility. A mandatory parent and student meeting will be required before admitted into Nursing Fundamentals. HOSA:HOSA is our Health Occupations Student Association. It is a Career Technical Student Organization. I highly recommend that EVERY student in Health Science join HOSA. The cost is $35.00 per student and will include a HOSA t-shirt. HOSA dues are due by September 21st. Our curriculum closely parallels HOSA activities. Your student will be doing HOSA activities in class. North Carolina HOSA is part of the National HOSA organization, which is endorsed by the U.S Department of Education and the Health Occupations Educations Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education. Joining the association, allows for your student to network with healthcare professionals beyond the classroom and clinical experience. HOSA is 100% healthcare. HOSA promotes basic technical skills, teaches students how to be people oriented, and leadership capacity necessary to satisfy entry level job requirements. HOSA motivates students to learn, and motivates students to go outside the classroom walls. We participate in community service, field trips, and competitive events with other HOSA members in district, state and nationally. There are also scholarship opportunities. A student must be a paid member to participate in these activities. HOSA is also encouraged in the college levels. Our first meeting will be held in my classroom September 4th, directly after school. I plan to have meetings the first Tuesday of every month directly after school. Meetings are mandatory, as we will be planning for competitive events and community activities. Attendance is a must do to the amount of information and planning that will be discussed. All parents are invited to attend the meeting on September 4th. Again, I strongly recommend that students become a HOSA member. It is rigorous, rewarding and fun. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
