Biomedical Science Señor Robles Skin Injuries Fill in the table below with descriptions and examples, then label the drawings on the back for reinforcement. Then use this information for the simulation lab. # 1 2 3 Name of injury INCISION LACERATION ABRASION 4 CONTUSION 5 PUNCTURE 6 AVULSION 7 CONCUSSION 8 FIRST DEGREE BURN Description An incision wound is a cut in the skin caused by a sharp object such as a knife, broken glass, scissors or surgeon’s scalpel. Incision wounds are ‘neat’ and the edges of the skin are usually smooth. A laceration is injury to the skin that results in the skin being cut or torn open, most commonly made by some sort of blunt trauma such as being hit with a baseball bat. Unlike an incision, a laceration is jagged because the skin is torn instead of cut. An abrasion is a type of wound in which the skin is scraped or rubbed off. Abrasions are usually superficial wounds, meaning that only the outer layers of skin are affected. A contusion is a kind of closed wound, meaning that the skin is not broken. Contusions are caused by blunt force trauma to the skin that results in tissue damage. When the blood vessels under the skin are broken, blood pools under the skin causing a bruise. A puncture wound is created when a sharp object enters the skin and are usually small and do not bleed a lot. Although these wounds tend to close over quickly, they still need treatment as tetanus infection is a possibility. An injury in which a body structure is forcibly detached from its normal point of insertion, the tearing away of an attached or anchored tissue. An immediate and transient alteration in brain function, including alteration of mental status and level of consciousness, resulting from mechanical force or trauma. In many cases, there are no external signs of head trauma. First-degree burns cause minimal skin damage. They are also called “superficial burns” because they only affect the outermost layer of skin. They usually heal within three to six days. Possible ways it occurs Alongside each illustration, name the type of skin injury most likely to occur because of the incident depicted.
