News from Class 1
Class One have enjoyed a week of Christmas celebrations including a lovely morning of arts and
crafts with FODs volunteers and a fantastic Christmas lunch complete with presents from Santa. The
classroom is full of glitter, paper chains and sparkly pictures which is a great reflection of the fun we
have been having.
If anyone has any spare small world type toys they could donate to Class 1, things like, cars, farmyard
pieces, silvanian families etc, that would be very appreciated – thank you
Have a fantastic Christmas break and well done too all the pupils in Class One for working so hard
this term.
Message from Mrs Wilson
I would like to say a very big thank you so much for all the gifts and touching messages I have been
given over the last few days. I am looking forward to choosing a special piece of jewellery as a
keepsake of my time at Diptford and I will very much enjoy the massage. Thank you also for the
beautiful flowers and all the lovely gifts given to me by individual parents.
It has been a pleasure and privilege to work in such a fantastic school. I leave with many happy
memories. I have very much appreciated working with such talented and inspirational staff. The
parent support has been wonderful. And the pupils of Diptford are truly amazing. I know that each and
every Diptford pupil will go on to benefit the wider world with their gifts and talents. I wish everyone
every success and happiness in their future.
Happy Christmas and thank you again.
News from Class 2
In English this week, we completed the marathon of 300 high frequency word tests. Your child should
have given you a letter on Wednesday with their personal results. We also illustrated our class text of
‘Spring’s Child’. The children worked really well together in co-operative partners to produce amazing
illustrations to go with our story. The published version of class book will be added to our book
corner, you are welcome to come in and read it in the New Year. We are going to leave a copy of our
book for Daniel Stone in ‘Wild Thyme Cottage’ as a Christmas present.
In maths, we were triangle detectives finding out which type of triangle had committed the crime. Can
your child name the four different types of triangles and their properties? We also explored lines of
symmetry in shapes.
In Science, we were continuing our topic on living things and their habitats. In the news, on this day,
there was an article explaining how butterflies are endangered. We were all shocked by this and had
an interesting discussion about how this might impact on food and energy chains in the future.
As well as all this, we have enjoyed lots of lovely Christmassy activities in this last week leading up to
the Christmas Holidays including: the Carol Service; making marble run games and Christmas
decorations (with amazing support from the FODs); eating a delicious Christmas lunch cooked by
Charlie and her team of helpers and were entertained by some fantastic talent in our annual
Christmas talent show, Diptford certainly has got talent!
We would both like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and cooperation with your
child’s learning this term. We have both enjoyed working with and getting to know your children and
are really looking forward to another busy and exciting term in January. Wishing you all a very Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Best wishes from Mr Nute and Mrs Neil
News from Class 3
This week we finished off our work on journalistic writing by completing our newspaper reports. We
used lots of the techniques we have learnt to create exciting, engaging reports on the class 1 nativity.
In Maths we spent the whole morning on Tuesday investigating negative numbers. We used a picture
as our starting point and had to answer question using our understanding of negative numbers and
number lines to help us.
In Geography we learnt about tectonics plates and how the movement of the Earth’s crust creates
different mountain formations. Fold mountain and fault block mountains are created when two plates
collide, however dome mountains are created by a build-up of magma that expands and pushes up
the earth to form a bulge in the surface. We received another clue from the Lady of the Black Flag
and feel like we are getting closer to the whereabouts of Agnes! This clue reads that the mountain we
are looking for is neither fold, fault block or dome. We’re not sure; we need to do more research but
we think this might mean that our ‘mountain’ is probably a volcano. So we are now looking for
volcanoes that exist in the area between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer.
On Thursday we had a fabulous crafty Christmas time! We made decorations out of recycled material,
created pictures with Christmas coordinates and also got the chance to decorate our Christmas
biscuits. Big thank you to Angela, Tracey and Kay for such a lovely morning. Then of course it was
Christmas dinner, followed by Santa, followed by Talent show.
What a wonderful end to such an exciting and hardworking term! We hope you have the most
wonderful break and looking forward to seeing you all again, refreshed and renewed, in the New
Year.
