REGISTRATION OF COURSES
Semester II 2015_2016
(First Year Students)
1. REGISTRATION OF COURSES
The recommendation* for all first year students is to complete 3 CORE courses (9 AUs), 4
GER-CORE courses (10 AUs), 3 Unrestricted Electives (9AUs) and 1 GER-PE (3 AUs).
*Please note that this is just a recommended plan. Students can devise their own study
plan provided they keep to the normal work load of 15-16 AUs.

Year 1 CORE and GER-CORE Courses (compulsory)
 All Year 1 students are required to take CS2006 (Theories of Visual Communication) and
CS2008 (Fundamentals of Research) which are CORE courses offered only in Semester II.
The entire Year 1 cohort will be pre-registered for this CORE course prior to the start of
the semester.
 In addition to the CORE courses, all Year 1 students will have to take the compulsory
GER-CORE (1 AU online course) under the following category:
Environmental Sustainability – GC0001
This course will be pre-registered for all Year 1 students.

GER-PEs and/or UEs
 The School recommends a normal load of around 15-16 AUs per semester.
 As only three courses (7 AUs) have been allocated, students need to register for
themselves additional courses from either the Major PE, GER-PE and/or UE categories of
courses via STARs during the course registration period.
Year 1 course registration:
CORE/PE/GER- PE - Friday, 11 Dec 2015 1.30-4.30 pm
UE
- Friday, 18 Dec 2015 1.30 – 4.30 pm
 Students can take CS courses at the lower level as UEs if they so wish. However, please
check that these courses do not have pre-requisites which you may not have taken
earlier. You are advised to check which of the CS courses are offered as both PEs and UEs

Notes on GERPE/UEs:
For WKWSCI students, GER comprises GER-CORE, GER-PE and GER-UE.

GER-PE is divided into 3 sub-areas of studies in key fields of knowledge comprising
Liberal Arts (GER-PE (LA)), Science, Technology & Society (GER-PE (STS)), Business &
Management (GER-PE (BM)). The courses are offered to students from all
programme.
WKWSCI students are required to take 3 AUs from GER-PE (LA), 3 AUs from GER-PE
(STS), 3 AUs from GER-PE (BM) and the remaining 6 AUs from any of the three
categories.
UE refers to any other courses offered at the School and University level but do not
count as CORE or PE.
Practicum courses offered by WKWSCI are taken as UEs. Students are only allowed to
register for one practicum per semester. The following practicum courses are
offered in semester II, 2015:
- CS2064/CS2164/CS4083/CS4183 – TV Practicum
- CS2061/CS2161/CS4081/CS4181 – News Practicum (pre-req : CS2021 News
Reporting & Writing)
- CS2068/CS2168/CS4087/CS4187 – Online Magazine Practicum (pre-req:
CS2021 News Reporting & Writing)

REGISTRATION AND ADD/DROP PERIODS

Students who wish to make changes or register for GER-PE or GER-UE courses can
do so during the ADD/DROP period. The ADD/DROP period for Semester 1, 2015 is
from Monday, 11 Jan – Sunday, 24 January 2016.
Students are NOT allowed to change the core courses that they have been allocated.
Poly graduates can only be exempted up to 12 AUs and exemptions will only be
given to GER-PE or GER-UE type courses. All applications for exemptions should be
done by semester 1, 2015. The School will not accept further applications and you
are strongly discouraged from making changes to your list of exempted courses. All
exemptions once submitted are considered final.
Year 1 students are NOT allowed to register for Year 3 and 4 courses beginning with
the code CS4XXX.
Students can register for additional CS subjects at the lower level and/or GER-PEs
and UEs provided that they have not exceeded the maximum 19 AUs and there are
vacancies for these courses they want to register.






Advisors
It is the responsibility of the students to follow the registration procedure and to
complete the required AUs from year to year.

Registration for Minors
Students may wish to take various Minor programmes offered by other Schools. For

Students are responsible to check for time-table and exam time-table clashes and
are advised NOT to drop any CS courses in favour of taking minor electives as you
may encounter problems registering for CS courses in later semesters.
