Course Objectives: The primary goal of the construction management internship course is to help students develop a comprehensive, “real-world” perspective of construction operations and construction management functions. Students who successfully complete the course requirements will be able to apply the skills and techniques learned in the classroom to actual operational situations while under the guidance of a supervisor or manager. Internship Placement Requirements: Credit Requirement: Students must be enrolled in a minimum of six credits during the fall or spring semester. The credits may include the internship course. There is no concurrent course enrollment required during the summer semester. GPA Requirement: Students must maintain a GPA of at least 2.0 and be enrolled as a construction management major in the Associate of Applied Science in Construction Management program. Department Approval: The student must obtain permission from the CM internship faculty member by completion of the Internship Faculty Agreement before proceeding with the Course Initiation Process. Self-support Program Fee: There is a $95 self-support program fee in addition to the required tuition. Course Initiation Process: The internship course includes both educational and workplace opportunities that involve the student, the faculty and department, and the internship employer/supervisor; all three play an active role in the student’s internship course. Students should seek internship placement that will provide a meaningful work experience and that compliments their career goals. During the internship the student is expected to be involved in construction management-related duties either in the field, or in a project or home office. The student should seek the advice of their student advisor or the internship faculty member if they have any questions about the suitability of a planned internship. Students will follow these steps to initiate the internship course: 1) Students must arrange their own internship employment. Information on companies who employ CM interns can be found at the UAA Career Services Center website www.uaacareerservices.com or in the department offices in Suite UC 130 at the University Center campus. Contact the Career Services Center at 907-786-4513 or Trudy James, CM Program Assistant at 907-786-6465 for more information. 2) Complete the following documents: 1. Career Services Center Internship Application 2. CM A295 – Construction Management Internship Employment Description: This form must be completed by the student and requires the signature of the internship employment supervisor. These forms, including the Internship Faculty Agreement, are available on the UAA Construction and Design Technology Division website, from the department offices in Suite UC 130, or from the UAA Career Services Center. 3) When complete, the student should bring these documents to Internship Coordinator at the UAA Career Services Center, Room RH 122. The Internship Coordinator will write the Internship Learning Agreement. The coordinator, the internship faculty member, the internship employment supervisor, and the student will all sign the agreement. The Agreement should be returned to the Career Services Center after all the required signatures have been obtained. The student will then be provided with a UAA Registration Form for the class. Syllabus – CM A295 – Construction Management Internship Page 1 of 2 The UAA Registration Form is taken by the student to Enrollment Services to register for the class. Students may not count any of the hours worked toward course completion until they are formally enrolled in the course. There will be no exceptions to this policy. After the student has registered for CM A295, internship work can begin. Students may register for the course at any time during the open enrollment period of any semester. Consult the UAA Course Schedule for the final date for enrollment in Open Entry classes. Course Requirements: 1. Work Hours: 225 hours of on-the-job work must be completed to successfully meet the requirements of the course. In accordance with UAA policy, a maximum of 20 hours per week may be counted during the Fall and Spring semesters to meet this requirement. There is no restriction on the number of hours per week that may be counted during the Summer semester. 2. Internship Technical Report: After the internship hours are completed, the student will submit a written report that addresses the student’s overall learning experience in the internship course. Please see the attached Outline for Technical Report for the requirements for this paper. 3. Internship Employer/Supervisor Evaluations: Twice during the internship period, near the mid-point and at the end of the internship, the employer/supervisor in the student’s workplace will be asked to complete an evaluation of the student’s performance. The evaluation forms will be sent directly to the internship supervisor and will be factored into the student’s grade. Evaluation and Grading: The student’s grade is based on the: 1. Internship Technical Report 2. Internship Employer/Supervisor Evaluations Grading will be pass/no-pass (P/NP) and is based on the quality and content of the Internship Technical Report and the Evaluations. A grade for the course will be issued at the end of the semester in which the student is registered for the course regardless of the date that they enrolled. Depending on the date the student joins the internship course, they may or may not have all the requirements completed at the end of the semester. In cases where the requirements are not yet completed, the student will receive a “DF” (deferred) grade. Upon successful completion of all of the course requirements, the internship faculty will change the “DF” to “P/NP”. DF grades do not affect a student’s grade point average but may have an effect on financial aid. All students should consult with a financial aid advisor and review the UAA catalog for information on DF grades. Syllabus – CM A295 – Construction Management Internship Page 2 of 2
