Franciscan The APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER leaflets for September are available in the narthex - please take one. SCRIPTURE NOTE: Legal observance has its dangers, for it is sometimes easy to obey the law exactly while forgetting its purpose. It is no good driving doggedly just below the speed-limit while endangering life and limb. The more exact the law, the greater is the temptation to manipulate it to evade its purpose. The Pharisees were as aware of this danger of distortion as is the modern stickler for exact observance. The Pharisees have a bad press in the gospels because, at the time the gospels were written, hostility between Christians and Pharisaic Judaism was at its height. During Jesus’ own lifetime their opposition was not so obvious. For instance, they had no share in the Passion and Crucifixion of Jesus. In any case, Jesus’ own final saying here, while it may apply to the Jewish ritual Law, has much wider application than the observance of Jewish rules for clean food. It is more akin to the saying in Matthew: ‘A sound tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor a rotten tree bear good fruit. By their fruits you shall know them’. A person’s true qualities are seen by that person’s actions; their true intentions and character, which comes from the heart, become visible in their words and actions. What sort of things would manifest a heart centred on Christ? REFLECTION: Cleanness of heart Today pollution has become a big issue and rightly so. People want clean water, clean air, and clean food. But we should be even more concerned about the most dangerous pollution of all, namely, evil. Pride, anger, hate, lust, greed, envy - all these are dangerous pollutants. So what must we do? We must purify the source; the heart is the source. It is the well-spring from which all our thoughts, words and deeds flow. If the heart is clean, all that flows from it will be clean. Blessed are the clean of heart: they shall see God. PARISH PRAYER Heavenly Father, pour down on our Church your Holy Spirit, the fire of your love. Give us the courage, the wisdom and the faith to be salt for the earth and light for the world. Help us to build warm and welcoming communities of faith in our families, our neighbourhoods, our Parish. May we carry the Good News by word and action into all our environments, especially those which are hostile and hurting. Together with Mary, the first evangeliser we entrust all our efforts into the care of the Divine Spirit, who fills and renews the face of the earth. Amen.
