Welcome all to your new pony club
year, and what an exciting year I
hope it is. I would like to thank
Caroline Breet who has undertaken
this major task of being our

keeping you all in touch with what is
going on in our branch. Hopefully by
the end of the weekend all the

HORSES IN WAR ....2014
marks 100 years since the
outbreak of WW1
One of the topics for this year’s
NFU Mutual Quiz is War Horses in
History. Our quiz team members
have been discovering the often
grim reality of being a war horse.
Horses were crucial both on the
battlefield and also to haul heavy
wagons during the Great War. The
casualty rate for horses was even
higher than the loss of soldiers,
with over one million transported
across the Channel to war and
only 60,000 returning. It is
estimated that over 8 million
horses perished in total during
the War, with many left to die
from their injuries, or drowned in
mud The Blue Cross Medal was
first created in 1917 and given to
Major Methuen of The King’s
Royal Rifles for his action in
rescuing horses under shellfire.
Three notable regimental horses
from WW1 are recorded as being:
Warrior, Songster and Orleans
