September 19, 2014
1. Welcome
a. Introduction of board

2. Guest
a. Desiree LaDuke - Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation - Science and Engineering Festival: talked
about the STEM event happening Nov 6-8th. Mind Trekkers is coming to Gull Lake to present hands on
experiments and the event needs volunteers. Contact Desiree LaDuke if interested.
3. President’s Report: Sara welcomed everyone to the new school year and is looking forward to serving a 2nd year.

Kindergarten mileage club cart : MK Pederson said she has filled this role with help from Heather Ackman
2nd grade field day
c. Popcorn Friday : announced that due to restriction from federal food guidelines, we are not having monthly
popcorn days. Rather special occasions and must be consumed outside. Volunteers will still make popcorn
inside, but then volunteers will distribute on the playground and stay during recess to monitor consumption.
Carl Mitchell is taking over as chair and the volunteer list will need to circulate informing everyone that it’s
back on. Kick-off is Homecoming Friday October 10
d. Upcoming Events: K-2 enrichment request for $300 for Oct 22nd presented by Karen Koets- they are asking
other sources to help fund the all grade level science training. Motioned made by Jenn Yapp 2 nd by Kelli
King. Motion passed.

4. Vice President’s Report : Merideth Alspach
a. Read-a-thon: starts Sunday the 21st – money due October 7th – count day will be Oct 9th
b. Teacher Appreciation: Merideth is chair and looking to do once a month events that all teachers/staff can
enjoy. Volunteers needed to supply time making bake goods if necessary or dropping off selected food
items.
5. Treasurer’s Report
a. Budget report : MK Pederson reported that the bank balance was $19,992.30 with several checks
outstanding from summer and early fall reimbursement submissions.
b. Bank Update: MK stated that she is looking into switching the account to a business account and
establishing a card reader terminal that can connect to an iPad. More information at the next meeting.
c. Budget Approval : motion made by Kim McCann 2nd by Jen Yapp
6. Secretary’s Report: not present
7. Principal’s Report: please see the PTO secretary if needed
8. Homecoming – Sue King & Kelly King
a. District theme - “The Avengers”
b. Richland float – “Heroes in Training” : Homecoming parade Friday October 10 -anyone who wishes to ride
on the float needs to meet in front of the Library/Methodist church between 4:45 and 5:15 bring a bag of
candy to throw from the float. Parents are invited to walk with the parade/float as is a child, but the child
must be with a parent. Parents who dropped off students for float must pick up kids at the Middle school
parking lot ( which is the parade end ) no child gets off the float without a parent present.
9. Box Tops – Kristen Flucker : made $6,000 last year, looking for room parents, sign up is here, please sign up if you
can. 3 times a year and track the progress on the bulletin board in the hall down from the cafeteria.
10. Reading Club – Maria Markucki: Reading club starts Sept 29 and will extend through the year. Prizes are given
based on minutes read each week and totals are achieved for that prize level.
11. New Business : parent expressed concern that the information that came home about Mileage Club was not clear to
a new family to the district that had never participated before. It was acknowledged that all chairs should write out
their program launch information from a voice that can be understood if you were a new family to our school. PTO is
working on website for more information about programs etc.
12. Closing
It takes volunteers like YOU to make our school great!
