Membership and Communications Manager
Posted November 2015
Open Until Filled
Neighborhood Funders Group (NFG), a national membership association of grantmaking
institutions, is hiring a Membership and Communications Manager to support the growth and
visibility of our national network and programming for social justice grantmakers. This full-time
position is based in our national office in Oakland, California.
ABOUT NFG
NFG’s mission is to build the capacity of philanthropy to advance economic, social, and racial
justice and community well-being. NFG organizes the field of social change philanthropy,
develops leaders in the field, cultivates thought leadership among its national base of
members, and encourages the support of policies and practices that advance economic, social,
and racial justice. NFG offers cutting edge, member-driven programming that examines the
critical connections between people, place and power and coordinates philanthropic support
for community-centered strategies. Our network is growing rapidly: over 800 people have
participated in our programming over the past two years. We provide highly regarded national
convenings, strategic funder-field partnerships, and ongoing support for member-driven
projects that advance community change work and philanthropic support for it.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Reporting to the President, the Membership and Communications Manager will serve as the
lead staff person for outreach and cultivation of NFG’s membership base, strategic
communications with members and within the broader field of philanthropy, and planning of a
biennial national conference. Fulfilling these roles will require strong communications skills and
close teamwork with NFG’s President, Director of Programs, Program Managers, Finance and
Operations Manager, and communications, conference and fund development consultants.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the planning and execution of biennial national conferences. As the most significant
membership activity we do, the membership and communications manager will play an
important role working with a team of staff and consultants in ensuring a dynamic national
conference. The next NFG national conference will take place in June 2016 in Oakland, CA. The
manager will work with the Director of Programs to facilitate the conference planning
committee, keep committee members on task, organize conference sessions and workshops
with members and partners, invite speakers and presenters, and partner closely with the
conference logistics consultant to ensure a well-organized and successful event.
Develop and implement a new membership and communications strategy and plan for the
organization. In particular, this plan will facilitate peer to peer interaction among members,
develop a regular membership and communications calendar of activities and communications,
and will emphasize converting funders who attend or participate in NFG programming into paid
NFG members. The manager will develop and implement a survey of NFG members and
supporters to inform the plan. The manager will work with other staff to identify any new
tools, approaches, or capacities that NFG may consider adopting in our membership and
communications work, including developing peer to peer products and tools.
Write and manage content on the website, e-marketing and social media communications.
This includes preparing a regular e-newsletter, regular Twitter and Facebook updates, and
periodic updates to members via email. The manager will also troubleshoot communications
issues and serve as NFG’s liaison to communications consultants and web site and graphic
designers. This position will look for opportunities to highlight NFG members work and thought
leadership on relevant topics.
Manage NFG’s web site redesign. The manager will coordinate staff input and lead the process
of redesigning NFG’s web site, working closely with NFG’s communications and web site
consultants.
Conduct membership campaigns and follow-up on membership renewals. Every year, the
manager will be responsible for securing renewals of paid memberships. The manager will
conduct membership drives twice per year, cultivate new members, and maintain
communication with NFG’s members, supporters, and prospective members.
Manage and update information about current and prospective members. Working closely
with other NFG staff, the manager will assess every NFG program and identify membership and
communications opportunities. The manager will be responsible for maintaining an up-to-date
database of current, prospective and lapsed members. We are currently using Nationbuilder as
our database and website platform. The manager will be expected to provide membership
reports to staff on request. The manager will also develop and conduct periodic surveys of the
membership.
