EMPATHY TASK “Vietnam”
ASSESSMENT WEIGHTING: 20% of assessment grade

analyses of the modern world and Australia

an historical inquiry
HT5-10 selects and uses appropriate oral, written, visual and digital forms to communicate
effectively about the past for different audiences.
You can choose the following options for this task:
Option 1 Prepare a speech for Vietnam Veteran’s Association dinner. Your speech should be
through the eyes of an Australian veteran who was in Vietnam; or a loved one who was also affected by the war (e.g. Wife or husband). In your speech you must refer to the War and post-war
experience, it must also reflect the social, political and cultural developments of the Vietnam War.
Or
Option 2
Prepare a speech for a Vietnam War anniversary dinner. Your speech should be from the
experience of a refugee from South-East-Asia. Describe your experiences during and after
Vietnam War. Make sure you talk about your experiences in Australia as a refugee. The speech
must also make reference to the impact the war had on political and cultural Australian life.
This is an empathy task so you must put yourself in their shoes. You may choose to dress up, have
props etc. You can record yourself in audio (use your note-book) or you may use movie maker or
a home video to record the entire performance as your chosen personality.
Teachers will not hesitate to give extra marks for effort and creativity. So if you want to be in “the
jungle” go for it.
PRESENTATION
A transcript of the speech is to be provided along with the recording of your speech ( you may use
Voki or any other web2 tool but you must make sure it works). The transcript presented in a single
plastic sleeve.or it may be emailed as a work document

Site Study.
Weighting 10%
A site study is a detailed investigation of a heritage site. The site can be local, regional,
national or international and can be a cultural heritage site. A site study involves researching a
range of sources, recognising how people have changed the environment and understanding the historical
context of the site

HT5-10 selects and uses appropriate oral, written, visual and digital forms to communicate effectively

3 How the site has stayed the same and what were the reasons that site has remained intact or has changed.
