Joined the Green Howards – April 1944
Ken involved in the retaking of Arnhem then with the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry attached to
the Canadian 49th Division. Later in Germany he was involved in controlling displaced persons. On
returning to England he was despatched to Haifa (Palestine) with the Royal Berkshire’s. He was
demobbed on a Class B Release meaning he had to retun to work at Foxton’s Farm at Skelton.

Owner of Newby Hall, enlisted in August 1941.
Served in 4th Battalion Coldstream Guards. Engaged in the Battles of Caumont and Overloon in
Holland, part of Operation Market Garden. Here he was wounded on the 14th October 1944,
thereafter serving as Military Attaché to the UK Ambassador in Vienna from 1945, being demobbed
in October 1946.

Served in the RAF, volunteered in 1939 at the age of 26. At the time he was a ganger for McAlpine’s
managing the labourers constructing Dishforth aerodrome. In the RAF he was an aircraft controller
and recovery/salvage expert in Orkeney and later in Belgium.

Enlisted at 18 and joined the Kings Dragoon Guards, then transferred to the Sherwood Rangers
Yeomanry. As part of the 8th Army was involved in the North African campaign including the siege of
Tobruk. Returning to England to train on tanks, preparations for D Day. One of the first tanks to
make the beach on the landings. – full description of gallantry available.
Medals: Africa Star, Defence Medal, The France and Germany Star, and the War Medal, together
with the French Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star.

Served possibly in the East Yorkshire Regiment and took part in the Normandy invasion, injured and
sent home.

Served with the York and Lancaster Regiment, in Egypt, onto Syria, North Africa and Crete. Involved
in the siege of Tobruk. Due to an injury sustained at Tobruk he was eventually invalided back to the
UK and out of the army by August 1943.

Served with the Green Howards.
John Steele
Called up on 27th November 1941, joining the RASC. Served at Catteick, Cotherstone and Fairford.
Then despatched to Normandy on D day plus 2, with the job of burying the fallen. Wounded at
Falaise Bridge on 15th August, flown back to the UK for treatment then returned to France as a VIP
Chauffeur, three weeks of which he was seconded to the Nuremberg Trials.

Volunteered for service in 1931 in Submarines, becoming a Petty Officer in 1938. Served on HMS
Unbroken – 600 tonne sub. Promoted to Chief Petty Officer in 1942. It is understood that HMS
Unbroken was one of the first vessels to relieve Malta.
Medals: Distinguished Service Medal. Atlantic Star, The Itlay Star, The Africa Star, The War Medal,
Oak Leaf. His records and medals are held by The Castle Museum, York.
