WESTLAND HIALEAH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
OFFICER APPLICATION
ALL WESTLAND students in good standing are eligible to run for the Executive Board. The following are
the qualifications to be in good standing:
Class officers and Student Council officers must:
 Have a minimum weighted GPA of 3.5 in academics and conduct
 Nothing less than a B average in Conduct in any class
 No 3’s in effort for the marking period preceding the elections
 No financial obligations to the school
Student Government Positions
Student Council:
 President and Vice President: ONLY INCOMING SENIORS and JUNIORS CAN RUN, PRESIDENT must
have been in SGA previously
 Secretary and Treasurer: INCOMING SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, and SENIORS
Class Officers for each grade level:
 President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer: Candidates may run for office in their
corresponding grade level.
PRESIDENT: The Student Council President shall serve as an official representative of the student body,
preside over all meetings and the Executive Board, appoint committee chairs, and make all appointments
in accordance with Student Council business.
VICE PRESIDENT: The Vice President of the Student Council shall perform the duties of the President in the
President’s absence, preside over the Interclub Council, and perform all other duties delegated to him/her
by the President of the Student Council.
SECRETARY: The Secretary of the Student Council will keep minutes of the meetings and shall call roll of all
meetings of the Executive Board. He/She will file these records with the Student Activities Director.
He/She will be responsible for the Homeroom Sheet to be signed by all the representatives present at the
meetings. The Student Activities Director and the Secretary will be responsible for periodically checking
records to assure that proper procedure is followed concerning attendance.
TREASURER: The Treasurer of Student Council shall handle all financial affairs of the council.
Applicant must submit:
- Signed Application Form
- Copy of the Third Nine Weeks Report Card (Can also be accessed on your Student Portal.
Must reflect grade, effort, and conduct.)
- A typed original 500 word essay (Times New Roman font, 12 pt font, double-spaced, 1
inch margins) explaining why you are interested in joining Student Government or Class.
- 2 Completed Teacher Recommendation – both submitted BY the teacher. (At least one
must be completed by a core teacher on your current schedule.)

OFFICER REQUIREMENTS AND CAMPAIGN RULES:
 Students must have a minimum weighted 3.5 GPA overall and no conduct grade
lower than a “B” on the report card.
 Students may not have 10 or more unexcused absences or 20 or more tardies at the
time of application.
 Students may be disqualified if they have been in either SCSI more than once or on
outdoor suspension.
 Students running for President of a class or Student Government must do a speech.
They will be aired on Teacher Tube.
 Speeches are to be no longer than 30 seconds. Candidates must come PREPARED!
Time yourself before the taping.
 Speeches should focus on your abilities and goals. Follow this template:
 Beginning....I am John Doe and I am running for Senior Class President
 Middle.....What you plan to do if you are elected
 End........So, please vote for me....or vote on “date” for John Doe ...for Senior Class
Vice President
 Speeches will be played on Teacher Tube
 Any speech deemed in appropriate will not be shown in accordance with MIAMI
DADE COUNTY GUIDELINES.
 1 poster...standard size...per candidate...NO FLYERS!!! Teachers may post approved
flyers in their classrooms or on their classrooms doors.
 Once approved, you leave the poster in the Activities Office, and it will be put up for
you in designated area.
 Each candidate may distribute tags/stickers/goodies on April 15-16. However,
nothing can be distributed on ELECTION DAY! Students can wear tags on election
day if received prior to that day. Tags/Stickers cannot be larger than 5x7.
 MEET CANDIDATES DAYS! On this day, candidates can hand out goodies, stickers,
tags, etc. Object is for you to interact with voters and share your goals for next year.
 Candidates are only allowed to miss class during the lunch block, on MEET THE
CANDIDATES DAY, based on the teacher’s discretion. A limit to campaign
expenditures IS $30! Receipts can be questioned. There will be no campaigning on
campus on Election Day.
 Students will be voting using ELECT ELITE. The window for voting will be April 17-21.
 Campaign posters (one per candidate) MUST be removed by April 22.
 Candidates cannot remove or damage other candidate’s posters.
 Candidates must have their completed applications for office in the Student
Activities Office on or before the deadline time or they will not be placed on the
ballot.
 The candidate with the leading number of votes shall be declared the winner.
 Any defamation on Facebook, Twitter or other on-line sources, or by any other
method by a candidate may lead to removal from election.

 If reported for violating any of the rules found above, student may be removed from
election by a school site administrator.
 If removed from election, any votes received will be invalidated.
 Any problems with above requirements must be addressed with the Activities
Director ahead of time....not after elections are held.
REMINDERS
Review carefully the requirements attached before deciding on running for office.
Your fellow classmates and sponsors are counting on you to make a difference.
The winners will be announced on Tuesday, April 22 on the announcements.
Remember this should be a fun experience for all. Do not let running for office ruin
friendships.
