2. Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the Cathedral Pipe’s model Stephansdom ( St. Steven’s Cathedral). The
Stephansdom is modeled after the famous C12 by Austrian microphone manufacturer AKG. It is
guaranteed to reproduce you source material with the utmost transparency retaining clarity and
the quality you expect. You have made an excellent decision in choosing such a superior
microphone and will not be disappointed. Please send us your comments, as we would love to
hear your feedback.
3. Operation
Connect the 7pin cable (supplied with microphone) between power supply and microphone.
Audio comes from the additional 3pin XLR on the power supply. If possible use a short cable and
a high quality microphone preamplifier (with the phantom power turned off). This is of course
best for audio quality. Try to avoid running the microphone signal thru a patch bay or extra
connectors and wires. Attach the microphone securely to a good stand and lay the cables so that
people cannot trip over the cable or topple the stand. Connect the power supply to the wall outlet
and turn on the supply. Let the microphone warm up for at least 5 minutes before using. If the 7
pin, power, or XLR connectors become loose over time, make sure to tighten them with a screw
driver.

5. Polar Patterns
There are 3 main polar patterns used with most microphones today they are :
Omni
Cardioid
Figure Eight
This model will allow you to not only choose between these patterns but it also has available the in
between patterns. With this flexibility you will be able to dial in the sound you want. For example, a
setting between the cardioid and figure eight will result in super-cardiod and hyper-cardiod patterns
as shown below.
When using your Cathedral Pipe for close microphone applications such as vocals or solo
instruments you can use the different polar patterns to adjust the proximity effect. By adjusting
pattern selection switch you can dial in the amount proximity effect for this particular use. More
Omni will give less proximity effect while more figure eight will bring in more lows. In other words,
amongst other uses, the pattern select can be an effective bass control.
