METEORA, GREECE SIX MONASTERIES “Μετεωρα”IS GREEK FOR “SUSPENDED IN THE AIR” These remarkable Greek orthodox monasteries are placed upon, tall, towering sandstone peaks in Thessaly, Greece. They overlook the underlying city and all the farm land around. The monasteries sit 300-1000m in the air. The beautiful rock peaks were “created 60 million years ago” states Greek geologist Papadakos, “Tertiary period, emerging from the cone of a river and further transformed by earthquakes. The pillars are of brown sandstone”. Weathering and earth quakes has shaped them to the state they are in today. Many movements of the earth have moved the seabed up, therefore leaving fault lines in the thick sandstone. At the base of these peaks is the cave of Theopetra where petrified diatoms have been discovered. These remarkable rocks are more than a look into the past; they leave us evidence that tell us about the past.
