Acropolis
Athens, Greece
Athens Greece, the main city, has been inhabited for approximately 8000years.
Through that time many extraordinary rock sculptures and buildings have been made. A
block of late Cretaceous limestone on marls and sandstones of Athens schist rock is
what makes up the Acropolis hill. Recently the Acropolis has gone under construction
and the top of the hill has been artificially filled, yet that cannot take away from the
beauty lying on top of the hill. The Acropolis, made of limestone, has been weathered
and shaped over the years. Leaving behind great towering arches, columns, and rock
face. The acropolis hill is a great place to visit for you may walk right up and through the
acropolis itself.
Aghios Ioannis Chapel
Skopelos Greece
This historic church in Skopelos, Greece is well known for its role in the movie
Mamma Mia. The church is 100m in the air placed upon sea rock. The rock contains
many fractures and has been weathered down. The rock sits out in the middle of the
ocean attached to the shore by a small base of rock. The rock has life growing on it and
under it. The water surrounding the rock is crystal clear from the top and reveals a
variety of sea life when snorkelled around. The rock contains many different colours,
and has 105 steps carved into the side. This rock not only holds an exquisite church but
is amazing to look and learn about.
Sidari & the Channel of Love
Greek island of Corfu
The Canal d’Amour located in the city of Sidari; on the Greek island Corfu has
become increasingly popular over the last couple of years. The Canal d’Amour, other
words known as the Channel of Love, is made up of coves and canals created by the
sea. This sedimentary rock is an extraordinary site to see, and the layering is quite
visible to the naked eye. The rock has been weathered down by the sea giving many
spots coves and other places to explore. The erosive action of wind has made curves in
the Channel. The name Canal d’Amour comes from a story that said the pairs that will
swim from the one end of the channel to the other end will generally stay in love with
each other. There are also three main beaches overlooking the Channel of Love where
people are welcome to relax and bathe in the sun.
METEORA, GREECE
SIX MONASTERIES
“Μετεωρα”IS GREEK FOR “SUSPENDED IN THE AIR”
These remarkable Greek orthodox monasteries are placed upon, tall, towering
sandstone peaks in Thessaly, Greece. They overlook the underlying city and all the
farm land around. The monasteries sit 300-1000m in the air. The beautiful rock peaks
were “created 60 million years ago” states Greek geologist Papadakos, “Tertiary period,
emerging from the cone of a river and further transformed by earthquakes. The pillars
are of brown sandstone”. Weathering and earth quakes has shaped them to the state
they are in today. Many movements of the earth have moved the seabed up, therefore
leaving fault lines in the thick sandstone. At the base of these peaks is the cave of
Theopetra where petrified diatoms have been discovered. These remarkable rocks are
more than a look into the past; they leave us evidence that tell us about the past.
The Blue Caves
Greek Island Zakynthos
The blue caves, known for the crystal blue waters around sea caves, is located
on the Greek Island Zakynthos. The caves have interesting arches created by erosion
over thousands of years. Many people choose to dive in these caves or kayak through
them. There are a variety of different caves, with different colours, shapes, and erosion.
There is much to explore there and on top of that the caves are home to many sea
creatures. The ocean waves have created beautiful arches in the entrances of these
ocean caves, allowing you to see the scenery inside and out while entering the cave.
The biggest of the caves is the Kianoun cave. It is a place that is worth seeing.
