Course Goals: To translate unadapted Latin texts
To analyze Latin literature for meaning, structure, and artistic value
To recognize and develop a context for Latin literature within Roman culture and its
impact on other cultures including English literature and art
Component One: Sight translation
Students must be able to translate any selection from Ovid’s Metamorphoses with accuracy and
fluency. For this component, students are allowed to use a dictionary. This correlates to Paper 1 of the
IB exam. To prepare for this, students will complete a sight translation every time class falls on a
Monday. For this section I am evaluating can the student read the language? Can he use the greammar
rules and vocabulary to figure out a text? Can he use a Latin dictionary and context to figure out
unfamiliar words? These are scored using IB rubrics and count as three formal assessment grades.
Component Two: Genre Study
We will be studying two major themes: Epic poetry through Vergil’s Aeneid and the portrayal of
women in Latin literature.
Component 2.1
Vergil’s Aeneid Book One Lines 1-49, ___________________
Students should be able to translate these lines, scan, and analyze style. They must also be able
place the passages in the context of the story, the genre of epic poetry, and the cultural and historical
context of the Aeneid. This component of the course was begun in Level Four and will be completed in
the fall.
Component 2.2
Women in Roman Literature
Students will translate and analyze the portrayal of women in Latin literature. The selections
are: Ovid Heroides 1, Livy Ab Urbe Condida 2.13, Cicero Pro Caelio 35-40, and Vergil Aeneid 11 lines
648-724. Students must be able to discuss literary style and the deeper meanings on cultural and
historical context. For poetry selections, students must be able to scan dacletylic hexameter and elegiac
couplet. No dictionary is allowed on this section so they must develop a text specific vocabulary. They
must be to able to identify context and content of the extract, how it is charactetristic of the genre,
explanation of literary and stylistic features, and translate. These selections will be prepared in class.
Component 3 Research Dossier
The student will choose a research topic and prepare a research dossier using 7-9 primary
sources to support and answer the research question. Topic choice and research question is due
________________. The dossier is due Feb. 22.

Students will concentrate on Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Each student should purchase if possible
an English translation of the Metamorphoses. They are responsible for reading each story, writing a
brief summary of the character and plot as well as any specific imagery included in that story. A
familiarity with the plot of the book will assist in translating the sight passages both in class and on the
IB test in level five.
Students will also review how to scan Latin poetry ( emphasis on the dactylic hexameter) and
to recognize and interpret poetic techniques.
The following selections of Ovid will be translated and rgianalyzed: Daphne and Apollo.
Every Monday class students will complete a momentum translation from the Metamorphoses.
This will be a formal assessment and will continue throughout the course.

Students will read the Aeneid is English as they are responsible for knowing the entire story.
They are encouraged to buy a personal copy so that they may annotate their reading. We will explore
epic as a genre, focusing on the Aeneid as the seminal work of Latin literature .Students must be able to
scan and interpret selections from Book 4 lines 198-552
