Greetings Imagine Leeland Family!
It is hard to believe 2014 is here already. As your Academic Facilitators
we are here to support students, teachers, and parents. In an effort to
support students and teachers we have committed time and energy to
creating a data room. This space will provide teachers the opportunity to
dissect data (i.e. SAT 10 and Test Wiz), collaborate with others
regarding best practices to improve instruction, and increase schoolwide accountability for student success.
Special thanks to all parents who have volunteered thus far this school
year. If you are interested in being a chaperone, please attend the next
chaperone training. This training is open to anyone who has NEVER
attended a chaperone training before.

Chinese – Ms. Bell
I am so glad to be back!!!!! I hope your students enjoyed the time they
spent with Du Laoshi, as she enjoyed her time here with all the Imagine
students.
This month
Per Du Laoshi’s recommendation we will be working on identifying the
date and telling time. Students should be able to write, read, and say
the date and time in Chinese.
Things to remember:
Students need to ALWAYS bring their Chinese journals, Chinese
folders, Agenda Books, and a pencil to class.
Students always turn in homework in their Chinese Folders!!!!
Always check students journal from time to time to see what’s going on.
Tips:Have lots of fun!!!!

General Music – Mr. McFarland
Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade:
The Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade classes will focus on pitch
matching through singing as well as rhythm through various activities
including the use of percussion instruments.
A current class favorite activity that the students are doing is called the
cup game, which focuses on rhythm and keeping a steady beat.
3rd Grade & 4th Grade:
The Third and Fourth Graders will be performing on recorders using their
Recorder Karate books to learn elements of melody and rhythm. This
month the students will be focusing on learning how to self assess their
recorder performing as well as help each other identify mistakes and the
corrections needed using a recorder performance rubric. “Belts” will be
rewarded for the students as they play off each song level from the
Recorder Karate book.

Third Grade News
Language Arts, Science, and Math:
Welcome back from winter break!!
Our class is beginning a new science unit using the Foss Human
Body Module. In this unit your child will investigate the basic structural
systems of his or her body, which include the skeleton, joints, and
muscles, and the ways these systems work together to provide
movement and coordination. This is an exciting unit for students. Over
the next 6-8 weeks they will engage in thoughtful investigations
exploring bones, building skeletons, making models, and testing their
responses to sensory stimuli.

Your child’s interest in the structure of the human body can be
increased by asking about the investigations at school and by providing
additional experiences at home. Investigate a turkey or chicken bone, or
dissect a chicken wing to expose the muscles, bones, tendons, and
ligaments. Has a family member had an X ray taken recently? Ask for
the X ray; your child will enjoy examining it and sharing it with our class.
Physical activity is a great way to increase awareness of the human
body. Encourage a game of Bone Tag or Twister. Last, but not least,
visit the library to check out some great books.
Don’t forget the science fair projects were due on January 13 th
and the fair will be held on February 21st.
In reading we will work on past tense verbs and we will begin our
new novel “Robinson Crusoe,” so please be on the look out for those
novel packets.
The following concepts are what we will be concentrating in Mathematics
for the month of January:
 Reads and writes money amounts to $99,999.99
 Identifies rational numbers from pictures and draws pictures to
show rational numbers
 Identifies addends, sums, factors, products, differences,
quotients, dividends, and divisors
 Acts out, draw pictures of, and writes number sentences to show
multiplication and division
 Makes, labels, and writes number sentences for an array
 Writes division problems in three ways
 Subtracts numbers with 2 to 5 digits
 Subtracts money amounts
 Checks subtraction involving subtraction
 Multiplies using the multiplication algorithm
 Masters division facts
 Divides 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers by a single digit number
 Check division with multiplication
 Compare, order, and identify equivalent fractions

Records transactions in a checkbook register
*****We will continue to prepare the students for MSA and work on our
BCR questions daily. Please look at them and discuss them with your
children*****
Remember to please check over each homework question with your
child and practice multiplication and division facts. I will continue to send
out study guides for all of the written assessments. Please be on the
look out for those. I will also continue to update my Schoolnotes.com
with weekly homework assignments, important updates, and study
guides. Please be on the look out for our January field trip permission
slip. We will be going to the Toby’s Dinner Theater for the “Ben Carson”
play.

Fourth Grade News
Greetings and Happy New Year!
I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and are well rested!
We have begun our MSA preparation in math class. We will be
reviewing skills covered on the test in class and for homework.
Expect the routine to be slightly different in order to accommodate
all of the information that will be presented. A note was sent home
that discusses this further in detail.
Science fair projects are finally complete, YAY! I enjoyed seeing all
of the neat and exciting experiments and hearing the students
explain what they did as they presented. We will begin our new
unit, Magnetism and Electricity, next week. It should be a fun and
stimulating unit since there are several hands on activities.
Please make sure your child is practicing and reviewing all the
pages that are sent home. Written responses and explanations are
very important and are essential to them scoring high on the MSA,
so they should be practicing them daily. Also, please encourage
your child to focus and pay attention in class because the topics
WILL be covered on the test. This will ensure they are prepared
and able to do their best when MSA time comes.
It is also important that students come prepared to class each day.
In order to be prepared they should have several sharpened
pencils, notebook paper, completed homework, and any other
materials requested or needed for specials.
Thank you for all of your support!

Greetings Families,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful winter
break!
Thank you all for everything you have been doing at home to support
your child's education. As many of you may already know, I am
expecting my first child on August 15, 2014! It is a new and exciting time
for my husband and me. I will do my best to keep up with everything, but
I may need a little extra help, especially towards the end of the year! If
any parent has free time during the day and would like to volunteer to
help in the classroom and/or with grading papers  please let me know!
Thank you to those parents who have helped me since the beginning of
the school year!!
Shout out:
I want to say thank you to all those students in 5th who are challenging
themselves by participating in the ARC (Advanced Reading Challenge)
program! These students read novels, do an approved activity after
reading each novel, and have me sign off on the activity. They have
been doing this all on their own and are working towards reading 25
novels by March! Way to go!!
What We Are Learning:
In Treasures, we are working in Unit 3. The Big Question of Unit 3 is:
How do you use your intelligence to outsmart others? Some of the
questions we will be focusing on throughout the unit are: Why is the
theme of a work of fiction important? How can placing events of the plot
in sequential order help you? How do comparing and contrasting
information help you connect ideas in this text? What is the author's
perspective toward the events in this story?



Vocabulary Strategies: Analogies, homophones, homographs,
and context clues
Comprehension: Theme, sequence of events, comparing and
contrasting, and author's perspective
Grammar: Verbs: action verbs, irregular, linking verbs, main and
helping, future-tense, present-tense, and past-tense
Writing: Voice, fictional narrative, and word choice

question, cite evidence from the story, and explain answer) to answer
any questions about stories they read.
Check Schoolmax and Schoolnotes frequently to see your child's grades,
homework for the week, and important updates!
Make sure your child is coming to school on time every day! When they
come in late, they miss completing important morning procedures, like
their warm-up and writing down homework.
#1 most important thing to do at home is read to your child and/or have
him/her read to you every night for 20-30 minutes. This is the perfect
opportunity for your child to read and keep up with their novels or
indulge in a favorite book!

Sixth Grade News
The 6th Grade Students are planning a trip to Maryland Science Center
on February 20, 2014. This will be a wonderful culminating activity for
the Science projects students completed, as well as the scientific
discoveries made by the ancient Egyptians students researched.
Shout Out to Donovan Childs!
Character is at the core of Imagine. In Ms. Therese's homeroom, to
start our day off right, daily students reflect, discuss and write about the
monthly character words. Last month, Donovan Childs won the grand
prize for his essay regarding character...We hope to make this writing
challenge a part of the bigger Imagine initiative! Congratulations
Donovan! Who will win this month?
Sponge Bob does Science!
By reading and analyzing a variety of experiments proposed by Sponge
Bob and the gang, students are gaining knowledge regarding core
concepts of the Scientific Method. Ask them to explain the difference
between a dependent and independent variable! Do you know?

7th and 8th Grade Social Studies
Greetings 7th and 8th Grade Parents!!
I wanted to begin by saying Happy New Year!! We are about half way
through the school year. We have accomplished a lot, but there is still a
long way to go. The month of January is an exciting one for Social
Studies:
History Day
Imagine Foundations at Leeland Public Charter School will host its first
annual History Day on Friday January 31, 2014. This will take place in
the school’s gymnasium. Projects from the 7th and 8th graders are due
at the school on Wednesday January 29, 2014. This year’s History Day
theme is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.” All members of the
Imagine Leeland community are invited to attend this event. The 1st and
2nd place winners from the Imagine Leeland History Day will go on to
compete in PGCPS History Day on Saturday March 15, 2014 at Wise
High School. More information will be forthcoming.
7th Grade Social Studies
We have finished studying Southwest Asia and Africa. We are now
moving on to East and Southeast Asia. We will be taking a look at
several different topics, including the Great Wall of China, the Silk Road
as both historical and economic entities, Hinduism and Buddhism in East
Asia, Confucianism, the development of North and South Korea, and
feudalism in Japan. After we finish with East and Southeast Asia, we
will move on to Europe, where we will begin our work on ancient Greece
and Rome. With this unit, students will also begin to get a first-hand look
at the roots of the U.S. government, which they will look at even closer
next year in 8th Grade Social Studies.
8th Grade Social Studies
It’s a good time for a Revolution…the American Revolution that is!! Up
to this point in the year, students have taken a look at life in colonial
America. Now they will begin to take a look at how the United States
became an independent nation. This includes an in-depth look at the
French and Indian War, which leads to several acts which the colonists
classified as “taxation without representation.” We will also conduct a
mock trial of the Boston Massacre and have our very own Boston Tea
Party, in which students will need to consider what they would do if
placed in the position the American colonists were. Once we are
finished with the American Revolution, we will also look at the Articles of
Confederation and the U.S. Constitution, including Supreme Court cases
which have challenged the validity of different parts of the Constitution.
School Max and Parent Conferences
Grades are updated in School Max on a regular basis. Students are
also given all assignments back to bring home with the appropriate
feedback. If you have any questions about specific assignments or
grades in general, please do not hesitate to ask. Additionally, if you
would like to schedule a parent-teacher conference, please contact me
directly either via phone call or email.
Upcoming Field Trips
Students in 7th and 8th Grade have some exciting field trips in the
upcoming months:
March 27, 2014  National Mall and National Museum of the American
Indian
April 23, 2014  Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center
If you are interested in chaperoning either one of these trips, please
contact Mr. Cuvo directly.
Thank you for all of your efforts up to this point this year. Let’s have a
great January and a fantastic 3rd Quarter!
Mr. Cuvo
