MAY 1, 2014
Greetings Imagine Leeland Family,
There are just 5 weeks of school left in this school year! As the old saying goes, “time flies
when you’re having fun!” As we navigate through the 4th quarter of the school year, working
hard to complete all of the “end of year” tasks and activities, I’d like to take the time to
thank each of you for your ongoing support of the teachers and staff at Imagine
Foundations at Leeland. Our teachers and staff have worked hard this school year to
continue to provide your children with an outstanding education. Thanks to each of you who
have taken the time to show your appreciation to our teachers and staff during Teacher
Appreciation Week. They certainly deserve it!
“Developing
dynamic
individuals
through hard
work, academic
achievement,
and character
education”.
The Stanford-10 assessment will be administered to all students in grades K-8 on Tuesday
13th and Wednesday May 14th. Our 7th grade scholars will take the second administration of
the PARCC field test in mathematics and our 8th grade scholars will take the High School
Assessment for Algebra, both during the week of May 19th.
As we navigate through the remaining weeks of the school year, we ask for your support in
encouraging all our students to maintain their academic focus and display positive character
and behavior.
We will remain at our current location for the 2014-2015 school year. Many, many parents
came out to the meetings to express either their support or concerns about our possible
relocation. I encourage those same parents and more to come out to our PTO meeting on
Monday May 12th at 6:30pm as well as to our last Coffee with the Principal of the school
year on Wednesday May 28th at 9:00am and 6:00pm. The last Imagine Leeland Board of
Managers meeting of the school year will be held on Thursday May 22 nd at 6:30pm here at
Leeland in the library. We appreciated your presence and your voices at the meetings to
discuss the proposed move to Berkshire. Now that the decision has been made to remain on
our current location, your presence and your participation in our PTO meetings, Coffee with
the Principal and Board meetings that are held regularly each month is needed with the
same enthusiasm. 
As always, we appreciate your ongoing partnership and collaboration in making Imagine
Foundations at Leeland a school of excellence for all students in Prince George’s County.
For the love of children,
Lynnette R. Walker, Ed.D.

Greetings Imagine Leeland Family!
Fourth quarter is well on its way. As a school community we are focused on closing
out this school year successfully! In order to do so please ensure students arrive
to school on time, are prepared for instruction, in full uniform, and are ready to
learn.
Thus far during the forth quarter our staff has engaged in continued professional
learning pertaining to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College
and Careers (PARCC) questions and exemplar responses and team level training for
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Professional learning of this
caliber will aid in our commitment to providing students quality instruction in a
safe and orderly environment.

will also be sending information on what to send on that day, i.e. water, healthy snacks, etc.
We are emphasizing healthy eating and it will be in the best interest of our students for all
stakeholders to promote this idea of less junk food and more nutritious food.

Only one month of school left! Please make sure you double-check your child's uniform before
you send them into school. We want them looking their best in their uniforms!
In math, we will be starting nickels! So when you go to the grocery store, you could let your
child count the change! In reading, don't forget to practice the decodable readers. They are
sent home to help your child continue to develop their reading skills.
WE ARE GOING TO THE ZOO!!!!! We cannot wait for this fun field trip. This ties to the science
lessons we have been doing on animals. It also ties to the reading unit which was also about
animals.

subtracting two digit numbers with regrouping. In Science we are still talking about the
states of matter. We have completed our solid section and will be starting liquids and
gases. Please continue to work on spelling and sight words. It is important that your child
is reading daily. Get ready because we are going to the ZOO!!!!!!
Language Arts, Math and Science:

:
We are almost to the finish line!!
We will begin our study of objects in the sky- the Sun, Moon, and stars. We’ll start with sun
and use a variety of tools to observe and record its position in the sky. To orient ourselves we
will use a compass. Then we will study the Moon. We will observe the moon during the day
and follow that up with a night sky observation for homework. Since we are not in school at
night this must be a homework assignment. As a bridge to what we have been studying in class
students will look for the Moon and other objects in the night sky. To make the night sky
observations, take your child outside at about the same time each evening and observe the
sky. Talk about what you see. Discuss changes in the night sky from night to night, especially
the Moon.
The following concepts are what we will be concentrating in Mathematics for the month of
May:












Identify rays and vertex of an angle
Identify right and straight angles
Identify the number of degrees in a circle, a straight angle, and a right angle
Simplifying fractions using the greatest common factor
Graphing ordered pairs on a coordinate plane
Identifying Acute and Obtuse angles
Finding the median of a set of data and making a stem and leaf plot
Identifying perfect squares
Using the order of operations

Remember to please check over each homework question with your child and practice
multiplication and division facts. I will continue to send out study guides for all of the written
assessments. Please be on the look out for those. I will also continue to update my
Schoolnotes.com with weekly homework assignments, important updates, and study

The year has passed so quickly, I cannot believe we are down to the final month!
In math we will be learning about:
 Simplifying decimals and improper fractions; writing mixed numbers as improper
fractions; finding least common multiple; finding common denominators to add,
subtract, and compare fractions
 Using reciprocals to divide fractions; multiplying and dividing decimals
 Subtracting decimals from whole numbers; reading and ordering decimals through
ten-thousandths
 Measuring angles; scale drawings; schedules; symmetry and transformations
In science class we are finishing up our Magnetism and Electricity unit. We will begin our final
science unit, Matter and Energy. Students will investigate different forms of energy and
determine ways that it is converted to make things happen. They will work with different
states of matter; measure mass and volume; and investigate reactions between solids, liquids,
and gases.
Please make sure your child completes and turns in their homework everyday, it is essential to
their learning. Also, please ensure students are prepared each day. They should be equip with
pencils, paper, and all important daily materials.
Thank you for all of your support!
