The Herald asked Julie Black, citizen engagement associate of the Calgary Foundation which organizes the walks, to come up with five unique walks she says are “extra cool” that Calgarians might want to make note of May 1 to 4. They are: 1. A Downhill Stroll Through Shaganappi, Scarboro & Sunalta —Join “downtown Calgarian country and western singer” Matt Masters for a wander through a small urban green belt and the community choices that have shaped this part of the city. Beltline Victoria Park STEP FORWARD — Take a walk through past and present to learn about the City’s STEP FORWARD pedestrian strategy, with the strategy’s Project Manager Andrew King and heritage/business/community friends. 3. Treasures of West Dover – Food forests, an award-winning playground, and the best bargain shopping? That’s Dover, through the eyes of local resident Karen Begg. 4. Mahogany: Finding our Place as a New Community — Talk new neighbourhoods, environmental sustainability, and being community-builders and not just consumers of community services with Mahogany residents Dan Taubensee & Jordan Blasetti, and see the Mahogany wetlands. 5.’50s Modernism: Britannia Style — Scavenge sightings of iconic mid-century modern architecture in the complete neighbourhood of Britannia with passionate community volunteer Karen Paul. Jane’s Walk is a worldwide, global festival of walking tours in more than 100 cities, inspired by Jane Jacobs, an American-born journalist, author and activist who has written about urban issues in New York and Toronto.
