Children do a piece of 'cold writing' on a dream recipe. Warming up the tune of the text Rearrange the cut-up paragraphs of a short exemplar instruction text / recipe. In groups, read it aloud (to check it is coherent) and explain the order. Look at other examples of instruction text: go through them to identify imperative verbs and impersonal language. Use Magpie (Treasure Chest) books to collect useful vocabulary. Imitation Introduce the text- a recipe. Introduce the idea of TFW and learning actions and reciting the text as a whole class. Get the children to stand up and recite the text one line at a time using the actions and try and remember as much of the text as possible. Introduce the idea of stepping for each new section (paragraph). Practise using some of the TFW actions to tell their partner the instructions they have written. Start a writer’s tool kit- what are the features of instructions that we need to know in order to write a set of instructions? Pick apart the text to help write this tool kit in the children’s words. Innovation Play ‘crazy instructions’ like how to cook a rainbow (TFW book page 73) Practise the actions for time connectives. Draw a series of pictures showing the preparation of a dream. Write an instruction to go with each picture. Practise using some of the TFW actions to tell their partner the instructions they have written. Show how to improve simple sentences and add detail and description. Shared writing: Introduction and what you will need. Independent Application Make a boxed-up plan for the dream instructions. Use the toolkit, magpie books etc to write a recipe for one of the BFG's dreams. Turn into display by making the recipe into a label for an appropriately illustrated bottle.
