OBJECTIVE
The purpose of funding is for a building renovation project in downtown Fort Payne that will serve as a
hands-on science learning and discovery center to support local STEM programs to enhance academic
achievement in area youth, as well as house activities to attract tourism to the region.
MESSAGE SUMMARY
The former Quinn Hotel is a 17,000 square foot building centrally-located in downtown Fort Payne. Its
proximity to other recreational amenities throughout the city and the surrounding national park system
make the property ideal for the organization’s outreach needs. The building is to be renovated and
converted to the W.M. Beck III Discovery Center, providing outdoor recreation and environmental
education to thousands of participants within DeKalb, Cherokee and Jackson counties as well as
thousands of annual visitors.
WHAT IS THE DESIRED OUTCOME?
By expanding One World’s classroom and exhibit space, the organization will provide local youth with
academic enrichment programs and attract and accommodate annual visitors to the area for
recreational activities, increasing annual spending in the area.
Fostering stewardship, awareness, and education of the area’s natural resources by increasing use in
area residents and visitors.
Provide hands-on, science-based experiential learning to support existing STEM programs in area
schools.
Diversifying and restoring the area economy, and revitalizing the downtown area. Increase tourismrelated industry and businesses to the area.
Capture lost tourist expenditures by providing more recreational opportunities and serving as a regional
attraction. Extend visitor length of stay, by adding one day to average overnight visitation. Increase
tourist expenditures.
Expand market potential – Attract a broader customer base to the area (bicyclists, equestrian, hikers,
backpackers, birders, kayakers).
