Collectively these activities foster a successful environment for business recruitment and retention, while providing a district that is inviting to both local residents and visitors to Cabarrus County. A year-round promotional calendar has been a strong component of the CDDC’s efforts since its formation in 1990. While the CDDC is funded through tax dollars from its municipal service district (a tax overlay paid by the property owners in Historic Downtown Concord), all promotions, events, and marketing expenses are covered solely through sponsorships from businesses and organizations throughout the community. The CDDC is a 501c6 organization, and as such sponsorship dollars paid to the CDDC are not tax deductible. (Note: the Union Street Live concert series and the Spring into Arts Festival are joint events with the Historic Concord Preservation Trust, a 501c3. As such sponsorships for these events can be tax deductible.) Businesses and organizations contribute to the marketing budget for a variety of reasons. With the exposure received from a sponsorship businesses incorporate this expense directly into their overall marketing budget. Sponsors also find satisfaction in a sense of giving back to the community by supporting events that are free and open to the entire public, as are a majority of the CDDC’s activities. Each sponsor is recognized for their partnership through a variety of methods specific to each event. These methods often include a combination of newspaper advertising, website recognition, weekly email newsletter promotion, magazine advertisements, and social networking mediums. This publication outlines the entire promotional calendar for 2016, specific sponsorship opportunities associated with each event, and benefits of each sponsorship. 2 Small Business Saturday takes place the fourth Saturday of each month, except November, when it falls the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
