Research Experience

Volunteer on NOAA SEAMAP Plankton Survey on research vessel (224 ft.) using CTD,
neuston, bongo, MOCNESS, and CUFES. Tasks included preserving organisms in formalin
or ethanol, and jellyfish measurements. Additional Sargassum community samples were also
collected using a neuston (Aug 2012 – Sept 2012). Total sea time: 16 days.

Volunteer on NOAA Groundfish Survey on research vessel (170 ft.) using CTD, neuston,
bongo nets, and trawling gear. Tasks included identifying, weighing, and measuring
specimens collected from trawls. Some additional Sargassum community samples were
collected using a neuston and dip net (June 2012 – July 2012). Total sea time: 24 days.

Sargassum community collection and analysis at Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo on a
research vessel (45 ft.) using neuston, dip nets, and hook and line. Performed fish
identification, dissection, and tissue removal (November 2011).

Zooplankton and Sargassum community collection and analysis at Bermuda Institute of
Ocean Sciences on a research vessel (186 ft.) using neuston, plankton nets, dip nets, and
hook and line (February - March 2011; July – August 2011). Total sea time: 24 days.

Sargassum community collection and analysis at Dauphin Island Sea Lab on research vessels
(65 ft., 46 ft., and 23 ft.) using a neuston, purse seine, dip nets, and hook and line. Performed
fish identification, dissections, tissue removal, and otolith removal. Assisted with long lining
and ROV (May 2010 – September 2011).

Contracted by IEc and NOAA for Natural Research Damage Assessment of Sargassum in the
Gulf of Mexico on a research vessel (140 ft.) due to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (May
2011 – June 2011). Total sea time: 24 days.
