Museum Highlights Gallery Talks given by SAMA docents based on the works of art found in the Museum
collections and special exhibitions. The first Tuesday of every month will focus on Aphrodite and the Gods of Love.
Classes
Figure Drawing: Sketching Aphrodite
6 Saturdays, September 22—October 27
4—6:00 p.m.
Meet in the Great Hall. $40 for members, $55 for non-members for the series. Pre-registration

Work with live models in this six-week drawing class for all levels with instruction by local artist
Larry Leissner based on the works of art found in Aphrodite and the Gods of Love. Learn
classical life drawing techniques such as foreshortening, proportion, and contrapposto.
Meditation in the Japanese Gallery
Saturdays
10:15—11:00 a.m.
Free with Museum admission.
Practice 20-30 minutes of serene meditation in the Japanese Art Gallery. Cushions and stools
provided.
Sketching in SAMA’s Galleries
Tuesdays

Enjoy an evening of casual instruction by Jack Robbins, artist and teacher at Northwest Vista
College, based on works of art in the San Antonio Museum of Art.

Children and their families are invited to explore the collections, create art, and have some
family fun.
Mighty Aphrodite
Sunday, October 7
Aphrodite was one of the most powerful ancient Greek divinities and has inspired artists for
centuries. Follow in their footsteps by sculpting, drawing and painting your own version of
Aphrodite. Listen to stories of Aphrodite in the special exhibition gallery which reveal aspects of
this ancient goddess in her various roles as patroness of brides, seafarers and warriors.
Interactive Family Tour: Aphrodite and the Gods of Love
Sunday, October 7
2:00-3:00 p.m.
Families are invited to take a journey through Aphrodite and the Gods of Love with a Museum
docent and end with an Aphrodite-inspired activity. Attendance is limited to 20, so arrive early to
ensure your participation.
First Sundays for Families is made possible by a grant from the Dan and Gloria Oppenheimer
Fund and the Frances Margaret Seaver Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation

Celebrate the special exhibition, Aphrodite and the Gods of Love, and learn how to be a part of
SAMA's new educator program emphasizing cross-curricular learning through the in-depth
exploration of one object in the museum's collection. For this Take One Object theme, we will
use SAMA’s Athena to create lesson plans. Those implemented by April 1, 2013 will be
showcased at the May 1, 2013 Evening for Educators. Three educators will receive an
honorarium for outstanding lesson plans.
