PARISH OF ST HELIER Thank you for your participation in the kerbside recycling scheme. To date you have helped to divert 1200 tonnes of waste from incineration. The kerbside recycling scheme started in February 2011 and has now rolled out across the Parish of St Helier. We thought we would take this opportunity to thank you for your participation and answer a few frequently asked questions. What happens to the bags once they have been collected? The coloured bags are collected from the kerbside using a normal refuse truck. The vehicle transports the bags to the Parish Depot recycling centre where the bags are split and sorted using a simple conveyor belt system. The separated materials are then baled and weighed before being loaded onto a trailer for despatch to our recycling partner in France. What happens to the bales of recyclables once they get to France? The brown cardboard goes direct to a company which produces recyclable packaging such as cardboard boxes. The paper and light card will go to produce egg cartons. The metals are sent to a company to be used for counterweights for vehicles such as tractors, cranes and forklifts. The aluminium is melted down into ingots which are then sold on to become other aluminium products. The plastics are currently sent on to China to be used for a variety of plastic products. Can you remind me what I should but in my red and blue bags? BLUE BAGS; newspapers, magazines, letters, leaflets, office paper, envelopes, cereal boxes, biscuit boxes and tea bag boxes. RED BAGS; plastic water bottles, shampoo, bubble bath, shower bottles, washing detergent bottles. Any metal food and drink cans. Please rinse before placing in bag. Please do not put aluminium cans inside other tins as the magnetic separator could miss sort these valuable commodities. What shouldn’t I put in my red and blue bags? We are receiving items that we do not currently have outlets for. Please help us by NOT putting in the following items:- waxed or plastic coated paper e.g. milk or juice cartons/dog biscuit bags plastic food containers, plastic coffee cups paper shopping bags with rope handles cotton wool, cotton buds, paper towels margarine or yoghurt tubs polystyrene packaging, meat trays of any type glass bottles/jars, fruit containers, crisp packets nappy bags, bread bags, aerosols IF IN DOUBT………..LEAVE IT OUT!
