Introduction
“Hi! I am Tom van Hulle and I'm 11 years old. People usually call me Cappie,
because I always wear a cap. It shades my eyes from the light and allows me to see
just a bit better. I can only see about 18%.
Not being able to see well also has its advantages. My hearing is very good and my
other senses are also better than those of the children around me. And that is pretty
cool!
I want to be a detective when I grow up. just like my father. But then an even better
one. What my father doesn't know is that I already help him... together with Sam,
Siggy, Ruben and Charlotte. We have a Club and we have our own hangout. It is a
tree hut, called The Caps Hut.
Oh ya, and our name is ... The Caps Club!”
Cappie
“P.S. I'm very keen on arithmetic and very good at it…;-)”

The Caps Club
Tom van Hulle
‘Cappie’
Cappie is the leader of The Caps Club. He has just recently moved to the town of
Hughevliet and is new at Hugh School. He is a bright and clever boy who has poor
eyesight, but he has developed his other senses very well. His hearing is super, he
recognizes all kinds of smells and is a born puzzle solver. In short, a real detective.
That is how he becomes involved in the Mystery of the King of Spades. A mystery
that grips everyone but one that only The Caps Club is able to solve.
Sam De Graaff
Sam is 12 and lives on Cappie's street. They are in the same class and are best
friends. Sam is a tomboy, daring, not afraid of anything. Her big dream is to become
an actress. Sam's parents are divorced and she and her little brother Robin live with
their mother Ellen, with whom she doesn't really get along with well. She misses her
father very much. He travels all over the world for his work. She hangs the postcards
and letters he sends her above her bed. They are her prized possessions. Most of all
she wants to be with Cappie. She has a secret crush on him.
Sigmund Winter
‘Siggy’
Siggy is 10 and attends the same school as Sam and Cappie. Siggy is in a
wheelchair. He is an avid inventor. He wants to be a professor when he grows up.
He has the coolest wheelchair ever, equipped with gadgets he invented himself. He
comes up with great inventions for the Caps Club too - very handy for solving the
Mystery. Every time he gets to make a new invention he yells: “It’s Siggy Time!”
Ruben Heesters
Ruben is 11 and a classmate of Sam's and Cappie's. He is very shy and sweet. He is
always in the shadow of his sister Charlotte. She does the talking and is the apple of
her parent's eye. Ruben dreams about becoming a famous illusionist. His tricks aren't
always foolproof, but he definitely has talent. And a great asset to The Caps Club.
Charlotte Heesters
Charlotte is 10 and Ruben's sister. She is pretty girl and she uses that to her full
advantage. Charlotte spends a lot of time on her appearance and does not like to get
her hands dirty. She got into The Caps Club by accident when she followed her
brother Ruben to the Caps Hut. Cappie and Sam weren't thrilled about her arrival at
first. But later she proved to be of great value to them.....
Sticker
“Sticker is my dog and my very best friend. He always knows exactly how I'm feeling

Charlotte-“

bedroom, but also my laboratory. I invented the coolest gadgets here. When the
alarm clock goes off, for instance, the curtains open automatically and so does my
closet. Very handy.. –Siggy-“
“Our school is on the other side of town. Ruben, Sam and I are in the same
class and our teacher is Mr Frank. Siggy and Charlotte are in a class together.”
“The MANSION. The mansion is a large, old, run-down house. The shutters
are always shut and we figured no one was living there any more. But recently we
suspect that that is where the King of Spades is hiding.”

‘The Mystery of the King of Spades’
Tom van Hulle lives in the town of Hughevliet. On his first day at school he
meets a girl, Sam Porter, and they soon become friends. One day, when they are in
the woods, they come across a run-down tree hut. They immediately decide that this
will be their secret hideaway. Their very own tree hut.
Sjoerd van Hulle has become a detective in the town of Hughevliet. On his
first day at work he is immediately swamped with work. A very valuable painting has
been stolen from the museum. Nobody knows who is behind the theft. The suspects
have been arrested, but they claim they stole the painting for an unknown rich
financier.
In the meantime Tom and Sam are fixing up the tree hut they have
discovered. Tom, who always wears a cap with a capital letter C on it, is nicknamed
Cappie by Sam. Lately Sam and Cappie have noticed that the spot where the tree hut
is is not all that secret at all. Several times now they have seen an old man walking
by their spot. One day they decide to follow him. They find out that he lives in an old
dilapidated house on the edge of the woods. And it becomes even more mysterious.
One evening Sam and Cappie witness a break-in at the old man's house. He
manages to defend himself but is left, wounded, in his door opening. Sam and
Cappie run over to help him. At first he is not at all pleased with their help, but when
he sees Cappie, he becomes less cross. The old man, who introduces himself as
Laurens, recognizes the look in Cappie's eyes and he tells them his life's story. He
tells them about his twin brother Lucius who was blinded when he was nine years
old. Cappie reminds him of his brother. Before Sam and Cappie leave Laurens gives
Cappie an old magnifying glass. The magnifying glass that belonged to his brother
Lucius.
Back at the house Cappie hears from his father that seven museums have
been robbed of their most precious paintings, all in the same night. Visitors have
stopped coming and the museums have been forced to close their doors. His father
has no clues about the culprits.
In the tree hut Cappie and Sam find a secret trapdoor. Behind it they find a
strange device and six old playing cards. Cappie tries to get the device to work, but
he can't. They decide to pay a visit to Laurens and ask him if he knows what the
device is. To their dismay they find that Laurens has disappeared and that someone
has searched through all of this things. In the house Sam and Cappie find
information about the twins Lucius and Laurens. Lucius is presumed to have died and
it is Laurens' fault that he became blind.
At school Siggy gives a presentation about inventions. He is a real genius and
Cappie asks him to come and have a look at the strange device they
have found. After a closer look Siggy discovers that it is an old Braille
machine. That sets Cappie thinking, he has discovered letters in Braille
in the police files of his father. Cappie and Sam decide to allow Siggy to
join them at their secret place and they form a club: The Caps Club.
Now that they know what the strange device is, they are left with the mystery
of the six playing cards. What is the secret behind them? Cappie has an idea. He
asks his classmate Ruben to come to the tree hut. Ruben is a pretty good magician
and maybe he can unravel the secret of the cards. What Cappie and his friends had
not counted on was that Charlotte, Ruben's sister, would also come out to the tree
hut with him. The Caps Club now has five members: Cappie, Sam, Siggy, Ruben and
Charlotte.
And then suddenly, strange things start to happen. Films start to disappear
from the cinemas, zoos and circuses close their doors, all TV channels go off the air,,
and then the electricity goes out. Nobody understands what is going on. Everyone is
at their wit's end and even the police don't have a clue.
Only the Caps Club have their hands on the solution. When they discover that
the numbers on the six playing cards refer to the dates on which the strange events
are happening, they are on to something. And this clue will lead them to solving the
Mystery of the King of Spades.
