Introduction “Hi! I am Tom van Hulle and I'm 11 years old. People usually call me Cappie, because I always wear a cap. It shades my eyes from the light and allows me to see just a bit better. I can only see about 18%. Not being able to see well also has its advantages. My hearing is very good and my other senses are also better than those of the children around me. And that is pretty cool! I want to be a detective when I grow up. just like my father. But then an even better one. What my father doesn't know is that I already help him... together with Sam, Siggy, Ruben and Charlotte. We have a Club and we have our own hangout. It is a tree hut, called The Caps Hut. Oh ya, and our name is ... The Caps Club!” Cappie “P.S. I'm very keen on arithmetic and very good at it…;-)” Pages 2&3 The Caps Club Tom van Hulle ‘Cappie’ Cappie is the leader of The Caps Club. He has just recently moved to the town of Hughevliet and is new at Hugh School. He is a bright and clever boy who has poor eyesight, but he has developed his other senses very well. His hearing is super, he recognizes all kinds of smells and is a born puzzle solver. In short, a real detective. That is how he becomes involved in the Mystery of the King of Spades. A mystery that grips everyone but one that only The Caps Club is able to solve. Sam De Graaff Sam is 12 and lives on Cappie's street. They are in the same class and are best friends. Sam is a tomboy, daring, not afraid of anything. Her big dream is to become an actress. Sam's parents are divorced and she and her little brother Robin live with their mother Ellen, with whom she doesn't really get along with well. She misses her father very much. He travels all over the world for his work. She hangs the postcards and letters he sends her above her bed. They are her prized possessions. Most of all she wants to be with Cappie. She has a secret crush on him. Sigmund Winter ‘Siggy’ Siggy is 10 and attends the same school as Sam and Cappie. Siggy is in a wheelchair. He is an avid inventor. He wants to be a professor when he grows up. He has the coolest wheelchair ever, equipped with gadgets he invented himself. He comes up with great inventions for the Caps Club too - very handy for solving the Mystery. Every time he gets to make a new invention he yells: “It’s Siggy Time!” Ruben Heesters Ruben is 11 and a classmate of Sam's and Cappie's. He is very shy and sweet. He is always in the shadow of his sister Charlotte. She does the talking and is the apple of her parent's eye. Ruben dreams about becoming a famous illusionist. His tricks aren't always foolproof, but he definitely has talent. And a great asset to The Caps Club. Charlotte Heesters Charlotte is 10 and Ruben's sister. She is pretty girl and she uses that to her full advantage. Charlotte spends a lot of time on her appearance and does not like to get her hands dirty. She got into The Caps Club by accident when she followed her brother Ruben to the Caps Hut. Cappie and Sam weren't thrilled about her arrival at first. But later she proved to be of great value to them..... Sticker “Sticker is my dog and my very best friend. He always knows exactly how I'm feeling and is a real lifesaver.” Pages 4&5 Our Parents Sjoerd Van Hulle Sjoerd Van Hulle (48) is Cappie's father and a detective on the local police force. He is a kind but naive man who is proud of his son. Sjoerd thinks of himself as a good detective because he is mysteriously able to solve all crimes. He often doesn't even understand how he does that. What he doesn't know is that this is thanks to The Caps Club. He loves Cappie but sometimes feels sorry for him too. He doesn't realize that Cappie is a hero thanks to his handicap. Emma Van Hulle Emma(42) is Cappie's mother. She is a warm, loving and clever woman and has great calm. She is has time to listen to everyone and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Emma loves her son Cappie to bits and is well aware of his talents, that contrary to her husband Sjoerd. She knows about the existence of The Caps Club but has no idea of what they are up to. Wilfried Winter Wilfried (42) is Siggy's father. He is from Surinam and a postman. He is very fond of his son and is always amazed by his inventions and solutions. He is more of an older brother than a father to Siggy. He is not the one in charge at home. His wife Winnie is the one who calls the shots. Winnie Winter Winnie (44) is Siggy's mother. She is a real Surinam housewife and a great cook. She is always scolding Siggy or his father about something. And when she is not scolding she is on the phone to her family. Winnie is a gossip. She is always the first one to hear something and does not hesitate to pass on the gossip. She thinks Siggy's technical inventions are weird. Things of hers have often gone missing somehow, things that Siggy has ended up using for one of his gadgets. Ellen De Graaff-Porter Ellen (39) is the attractive single mom of Sam and Robin. She used to be married to Robbert Porter. He has a new girlfriend now and travels all over the world for his work. Ellen is an artist who makes mostly sculptures. She is desperately looking for a boy friend, but keeps on bring home the wrong men. Ellen is a blabbermouth and she would like Sam to dress more like a girl and behave like one. Sam takes no notice of her. John and Jennie Heesters John and Jennie are Ruben and Charlotte's parents. They make a living running a party goods shop. They also organize children's parties or do catering. That keeps them very busy and so they have little time for their children. Charlotte is clearly their little darling. They are convinced she is going to make it as a photo model. Mr Frank Frank Verbrugge Frank (40) is Cappie, Sam and Ruben's teacher.. He is a kind man who loves to tell exciting stories. He enjoys helping the children of The Caps Club, even though he never really knows what is going on. Frank is a bachelor and has an eye on Sam's mother. But he too shy to even talk to her. Sam is fine with Frank as a boyfriend for her mother and the Caps Club make every effort to get the two of them together. Friend and Foe Laurens Stalawsky Laurens (53) is a sullen man who lives like a hermit in a small house in the woods. Laurens has a bad conscience. When he was 9 years old he unintentionally blinded his brother Lucius in an accident. That happened while they were building a tree hut. Even though his brother has since died, he still carries the feelings of guilt around with him. Lucius Stalawsky Lucius (53) is Laurens' twin brother. He became very bitter when he was blinded. Despite his acquired riches he never was happy again. The relationship with his twin brother Laurens deteriorated after the accident. They never spoke again in the last years before his mysterious 'death'. Lucius was a cruel man who lived all on his own in a huge dilapidated mansion. Pages 6&7 The Town “The series is set in the town of Hughevliet in The Netherlands. It is a medium sized town bordering on beautiful woods. Hughevliet has an historical town center, an old harbor and a train station. Most of the town's people know each other well and get along. Cappie and Sam live in the streets on the edge of the woods. Their house is within walking distance of their school 'The Hughenot'. “This is where I live. This is the house I was born in and where my father also used to live. My bedroom is always a mess, but I don't care. I know where everything is and no one is allowed in without my permission. –Sam- “ “The Caps Hut. The Caps Hut is the tree hut where we get together. Sam and I found this run-down tree hut and fixed it up. Siggy installed all kinds of gadgets in it." “This is my house. I've only just moved here. The house is on the edge of the woods. It is a lovely big house and I have the largest bedroom, so I won't bump into things. Cappie" “This is my parent's party goods shop. We live above it. –Ruben and Charlotte-“ “This is Ruben's handwriting. Mine is much better! XX Charlotte” “I live here. My room on the ground floor is called Siggy's Lab. It is a bedroom, but also my laboratory. I invented the coolest gadgets here. When the alarm clock goes off, for instance, the curtains open automatically and so does my closet. Very handy.. –Siggy-“ “Our school is on the other side of town. Ruben, Sam and I are in the same class and our teacher is Mr Frank. Siggy and Charlotte are in a class together.” “The MANSION. The mansion is a large, old, run-down house. The shutters are always shut and we figured no one was living there any more. But recently we suspect that that is where the King of Spades is hiding.” Pages 8&9 ‘The Mystery of the King of Spades’ Tom van Hulle lives in the town of Hughevliet. On his first day at school he meets a girl, Sam Porter, and they soon become friends. One day, when they are in the woods, they come across a run-down tree hut. They immediately decide that this will be their secret hideaway. Their very own tree hut. Sjoerd van Hulle has become a detective in the town of Hughevliet. On his first day at work he is immediately swamped with work. A very valuable painting has been stolen from the museum. Nobody knows who is behind the theft. The suspects have been arrested, but they claim they stole the painting for an unknown rich financier. In the meantime Tom and Sam are fixing up the tree hut they have discovered. Tom, who always wears a cap with a capital letter C on it, is nicknamed Cappie by Sam. Lately Sam and Cappie have noticed that the spot where the tree hut is is not all that secret at all. Several times now they have seen an old man walking by their spot. One day they decide to follow him. They find out that he lives in an old dilapidated house on the edge of the woods. And it becomes even more mysterious. One evening Sam and Cappie witness a break-in at the old man's house. He manages to defend himself but is left, wounded, in his door opening. Sam and Cappie run over to help him. At first he is not at all pleased with their help, but when he sees Cappie, he becomes less cross. The old man, who introduces himself as Laurens, recognizes the look in Cappie's eyes and he tells them his life's story. He tells them about his twin brother Lucius who was blinded when he was nine years old. Cappie reminds him of his brother. Before Sam and Cappie leave Laurens gives Cappie an old magnifying glass. The magnifying glass that belonged to his brother Lucius. Back at the house Cappie hears from his father that seven museums have been robbed of their most precious paintings, all in the same night. Visitors have stopped coming and the museums have been forced to close their doors. His father has no clues about the culprits. In the tree hut Cappie and Sam find a secret trapdoor. Behind it they find a strange device and six old playing cards. Cappie tries to get the device to work, but he can't. They decide to pay a visit to Laurens and ask him if he knows what the device is. To their dismay they find that Laurens has disappeared and that someone has searched through all of this things. In the house Sam and Cappie find information about the twins Lucius and Laurens. Lucius is presumed to have died and it is Laurens' fault that he became blind. At school Siggy gives a presentation about inventions. He is a real genius and Cappie asks him to come and have a look at the strange device they have found. After a closer look Siggy discovers that it is an old Braille machine. That sets Cappie thinking, he has discovered letters in Braille in the police files of his father. Cappie and Sam decide to allow Siggy to join them at their secret place and they form a club: The Caps Club. Now that they know what the strange device is, they are left with the mystery of the six playing cards. What is the secret behind them? Cappie has an idea. He asks his classmate Ruben to come to the tree hut. Ruben is a pretty good magician and maybe he can unravel the secret of the cards. What Cappie and his friends had not counted on was that Charlotte, Ruben's sister, would also come out to the tree hut with him. The Caps Club now has five members: Cappie, Sam, Siggy, Ruben and Charlotte. And then suddenly, strange things start to happen. Films start to disappear from the cinemas, zoos and circuses close their doors, all TV channels go off the air,, and then the electricity goes out. Nobody understands what is going on. Everyone is at their wit's end and even the police don't have a clue. Only the Caps Club have their hands on the solution. When they discover that the numbers on the six playing cards refer to the dates on which the strange events are happening, they are on to something. And this clue will lead them to solving the Mystery of the King of Spades. Pages 10&11 The Caps Hut The Caps Hut is the secret tree hut in the woods where The Caps Club get together, Cappie and Sam found this run-down tree hut and fixed it up. Siggy has equipped the tree hut with all kinds of gadgets and features. The lift is especially handy. It allows Siggy to get up to the tree hut with his wheelchair. From the tree hut the Caps Club unravel the Mystery of the Kind of Spades. Episode 1 The Tree Hut Cappie and Sam discover the run-down tree hut. They meet Laurens and find a very strange device and six playing cards. A painting is stolen. Episode 2 The Club Cappie and Sam form a club, together with Siggy. They call it The Caps Club. Siggy discovers that the strange device is a Braille machine. Seven museum treasures go missing without a trace. Episode 3 The Cards Ruben and Charlotte join The Caps Club. Together they find the meaning of the six playing cards. Laurens has disappeared from his house in the woods. All of the films from the cinemas go missing. Episode 4 Letters in Braille The Caps Club find even more information in Laurens' house about his dead twin brother. He was called Lucius. The Caps Club find Lucius' grave to be empty and find two important dates by unraveling the numbers on the playing cards. Episode 5 The World upside down Museums, zoos, and cinemas have all had to close their doors. TV stations go off the air. The Caps Club find letters in Braille and the logo with the black eye. Episode 6 The Kidnap The Caps Club discover who is behind the TV stations going off the air. It is 16 year old Jonathan. He is kidnapped soon after they meet up with him. Episode 7 No Light The electricity goes off everywhere. The Caps Club discover that Jonathan is being held in the mansion. Cappie goes there on his own and is also taken prisoner. Episode 5 The King of Spades Together with the children of Hughevliet school, The Caps Club manage to force their way into the Mansion. They set Laurens, Jonathan and Cappie free.
