Subsequent Degree/Credential Attainment by UMass Boston Academic Year 2007
Bachelor’s Degree Recipients
UMass Boston has been able to access the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) Student
Tracker database and receive on which schools our students have attended and on any credentials
they may have attained. The system is not foolproof. We can only search on name and date of
birth, and any change like adding or dropping a “Jr.” designation, adding or dropping a middle
initial, hyphenating a last name, or changing a name outright means that we cannot locate the
individuals. We know that the numbers of students we locate is lower than the numbers of our
students who go onto another institution or attain a credential from another institution.
Altogether, the students received credentials from 102 schools across 32 states.
AY 2007 included the graduation terms of August and December 2006 and June of 2007. A total
of 1,418 individual received Bachelor’s degree in those terms. Of those, the NSC identified 302
or about 21% as having received an additional credential by the fall of 2013. Ten of them
received a credential from a two-year school. Most of those credentials were in a medical field.

A total of 292 of the graduates attained a credential form a four-year school. The credentials
included certificates at unspecified levels as well as a number that were not were not specified
because the granting institution reported only that the students had graduated but without any
other information. Among the 292 with four-year credentials, UMass Boston was by far the
most popular granting institution with 81 students or about 28% of the group receiving an
additional credential here. Five of the UMass students completed a second Bachelor’s degree
here. The Master of Education was the most popular degree to attain with 26 students receiving
it.
The second most popular granting institution were Cambridge College and Salem State
University each with 12 students.
