Student Focus Group Input – Proposed Bachelor of Environment

First of all, the Faculty of Environment would like to thank you for taking the time to provide us with your thoughts on a possible Bachelor of Environment (BEnv). Your perspective as SFU students is very important in curriculum design. The Bachelor of Environment initiative is at its early stage and may or may not move forward. If implemented, programs under this new credential would not begin until January 2014 at the earliest.

Your Major/Main Area of Study ________________________ Year/Expected Graduation _______________

The BEnv credential (as opposed to a B.A. or B.Sc.) would have more science than a B.A. but less than a B.Sc.

The credential would communicate a strong emphasis on environment. What are your thoughts on this?

All BEnv programs are proposed to have more lower division requirements than most BA majors to give students a solid foundation in the environmental biophysical and social sciences. What are your thoughts on this? What components should be in all BEnv programs?

A defining characteristic of the BEnv and upper division requirements may be an understanding of complexity, systems, modeling and decision making in complex systems/issues. What are your thoughts on this?

The BEnv would be a new credential for SFU under which would be a number of majors or concentrations .

Five possible areas of study are being considered:

Please RANK your interest:

Business and Sustainability

Global Environmental Systems

Settlements, Communities and Cities

______

______

Environmental Resource Management

Environmental Policy and Governance

______

______

______

Would you prefer that the above disciplines be concentrations or majors under the BEnv? _____________

Additional thoughts on majors vs. concentrations? Thoughts on specific majors/concentrations?

BEnv program would be interdisciplinary, apart from complexity/systems/decision-making components mentioned above, how else would you suggest integrating the disciplines?

What other suggestions do you have for a BEnv content, structure, teaching etc. ?
