Subsequent Degree/Credential Attainment by UMass Boston Academic Year 2008
Bachelor’s Degree Recipients
UMass Boston uses the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) Student Tracker database to
receive data on which schools our students have attended and on any credentials they may have
attained. The system is not foolproof. We can only search on name and date of birth, and any
change like adding or dropping a “Jr.” designation, adding or dropping a middle initial,
hyphenating a last name, or changing a name outright means that we cannot locate the
individuals. We know that the numbers of students we locate is lower than the numbers of our
students who go onto another institution or attain a credential from another institution.
AY 2008 included the graduation terms of August and December 2007 and June of 2008. A total
of 1,505 individual received Bachelor’s degree in those terms. Of those, the NSC identified 267
or about 18% as having received an additional credential by the fall of 2013. Altogether, the
located students received credentials from 105 schools across 30 states.
Credentials from Two-Year Institutions
Eleven of the graduates received a credential from a two-year school. Most of those credentials
were in a medical field. Details of the schools attended, degree awarded and degree majors are
presented in Table 1.

Credentials from Four-Year Institutions
A total of 256 of the students receiving a postgraduate credential attained that credential from a
four-year school. The credentials included certificates at unspecified levels as well as a number
of credentials that were not were not specified because the granting institution reported only that
the students had graduated but without any other information. Among the 256 graduates
receiving credentials from four-year schools, UMass Boston was by far the most popular
granting institution with 60 students or about 23% of the group receiving an additional credential
here. Four of the UMass Boston students completed a second Bachelor’s degree here.
The next most popular granting institutions were Simmons College with 16 and Boston
University with 11 students.
