Gateway Relationship
Gateway was founded to allow access to UK day schools to the international market. The model has
grown and we do now represent both boarding and day school on the Chinese Market. Due to our
founding schools being day schools we offer a high level of guardianship and accommodation in host
families to all of our students whether they need this all year round (whilst studying) or just in the
holidays.
We test and carefully monitor our students to make sure they find the right school, course and
accommodation for them. We will ALWAYS forward applications to the school, even when we know
the school will not consider them because; the school is full for that intake, the student has achieved
the right level of knowledge, the student is not of the right age to access the course ect. This
important so that the school can gauge the level of interest Gateway is creating and also to make
sure that the school can track any applications if contacted by a third party with regards to an
application.
The following information outlines the ideal relationship for Gateway but can be discussed with each
school individually;
AllocationThe school will allocate ‘X’ number of places for Gateway students, (this number is changeable by
negotiation). This allows confidence when students are applying that there are still spaces at the
school, because of this we ask that the school keep us up to date on offers so that we can keep
agents in China up to date to avoid disappointment.
CET The school will identify what level students they require with reference to Gateways Common
Entrance Tests (CET). Students will all complete an English test, also if relevant to course options
Maths and Physics tests. The school are also able send in requests for test changes every summer for
the following years tests, there is a CET board meeting held every summer all schools using the CET
are encouraged to offer thoughts for improvement ect. The CET will be marked by Gateway and the
results as well as copies of the completed test papers will be forwarded to the school. Gateway
strongly advice the school to do a Skype interview, this can make a borderline student a definite
either way this can also flag students that struggle with their speaking and listening obviously
making school life difficult.
Marketing The school will provide marketing materials and information to Gateway, relevant to promoting the
school. Gateway produce their own brochure and will require access to various school marketing,
including logo’s, photo’s, testimonials from students, leavers destinations, exam results, and
differential points these need to be quantifiable, for example “small class sizes” this is used in
reference to UK state school classes so to a international student that is currently in a class of over
60 students UK state schools have small class sizes.
Applications The school will contact Gateway within 2 working days of receipt of any application to update on the
status of the application; we strongly advise that schools interview all applicants either in person or
via Skype. The school will contact Gateway within 2 working days of the interview to update us on
whether they wish to make an offer to this student or not. The school are advised to give a deadline
date on all offers to students, the offer can be renewed if the student miss the deadline but this
does encourage a response from the student and means that both the school and Gateway can keep
a clear track of places still available.
Exclusivity Gateway will deal exclusively with either; all international applications/ all non-EU applications / all
Mainland China applications (dependent on agreement). The school will include reference to
Gateway Guardianship on their website as all international students will require guardianship and
for day schools accommodation whilst studying in the UK. Also that the school inc the total
“International fee” (this is including guardianship) in their fees. Gateways contact details should also
be available or given to all international/non-EU/Mainland China prospective pupils.
Invoicing The student will be billed as one; school fees, guardianship, ect. Gateway and school should work
together and invoice as one (this is proven to protect both the school and gateway in receiving the
full payment) If the school wish to invoice then they can pay the money to gateway termly if they
would prefer, whomever produces the invoice it should be clear that the invoice is from the school
and Gateway (on school headed paper with the gateway logo).
International Documentation The school will be or will become Tier 4 registered and will carry out the Confirmation of Acceptance
of Studies (CAS). Gateway can support the school through these processes both directly and with the
support of schools already registered and with experience producing CAS.
Notify the local authority of any children under 16, under Regulation 3 of The Children (private
arrangements for fostering) Regulations.
Agent and Recruitment Trips –
Gateway arrange 2 recruitment trips to China one in October half term and one in February half
term, this is an opportunity for the school to send a representative to China to meet and interview
students. Gateway also arrange for agents to come to the UK to familiarise themselves with the
schools, schools are expected to support Gateway during these trips.
Marketing and Identifying Prospective Students Gateway will market the school internationally, but essentially in Mainland China. The school will
circulate the schools marketing as well as including the school within Gateways marketing;
brochures, on-line, via agencies in China, at international Conferences ect. When students attend
agent’s offices then the agents and student councillors will recommend and market the school. Once
students have been identified they will complete the CET, these test will be marked by Gateway and
forwarded with the students application. Gateway will be able to tell the school whether the student
meets the schools entrance criteria or not the school may still wish to consider students that have
only just missed the criteria in special circumstances, perhaps musical ability or interest relevant to
the school. Gateway will share all information on all students interested in the school. This will mean
the school is aware of the amount of interest in the school. Gateway may also direct students to the
school that have the desirable CET results.
Guardianship –
Gateway Guardianship is the branch of Gateway that provides our students with experienced
guardian’s whist in the UK, as Gateway predominantly work with Day schools our guardianship
package is highly supportive and tailored to the needs of students in Day schools. Gateway and the
school will work together as the school would work with any other guardian, the guardian passes on
