What Are You Doing?

2. Overview of Lesson
- Grade : The 5th grade(Elementary School)
- Title : Present continuous verb form
Communicative Approach emphasizes interaction(like role-paly, pair work, and
games) as the means to learning a language. This approach stresses the
importance of communication. As it was the historic Korean English educational
grammar center, it had a lot of difficulty to communication. Therefore, a recent
English educational policy is doing it for the purpose of elevations functional
communication. CLT left a base to real situation of students talk and can raise a
communication function.
In case of fifth grade of Korean students start exactly for feeling a burden
regarding a speaking. An education difference grows larger. Therefore, we used
CLT through communication at real situation in order to raise confidence regarding
English.
We're going to plan students to use communicative functions and Language
structures(like What are you doing? I'm washing my hand. What is she/he doing?
She/He's swimming) through supportive and communicative activities. Children
are motivated and interested in practical educational value and introduced to a
wide range of natural English. Because guessing, survey, mime, and filling
activities are very meaningful, understandable, funny to elementary school
students.
This unit will be presented in the 3rd quarter of the elementary school year. We
will focus on listening and speaking activities. The present continuous verb is
used broadly in the real life. Many elementary school students wonder what their
friends are doing during their break time, on the phone, in school, in the house, ine
other places. Most people are interested in others's present activities. So we
choose a subject about present continuous verb form in lesson.
Expressions of present activities are the most frequently used verb forms in the
real life. In this unit, students will learn the present continuous verb form in
asking and answering questions about present activities and apply them in the real
life.
3. Objectives
Students will be able to :
1. Recognize and use the present continuous verb form with the ‘to
be’verb.
2. Identify that the present means now and continuous means
happening.
3. Use some new verbs in sentences describing the action
happening at the moment.
4. Practice using the present continuous in 'Mime Game'.

• Motivation : Make students motivate by guessing actions
- Prepare Powerpoint materials(about Popular actor on TV show)
- Let me show you some pictures. Do you know 'Muhandojeon's members?
They're doing something. Let's find their actions.
- Teacher ask some questions like "What is(are) he(they) doing?"
- Student guess the action and answer the question like �He's(They're)
dancing(singing, crying, etc.)"

♠ 【Activity 1】Survey
• Make students go around and survey what their friends' are doing.
- give a survey sheet each one.
- Every student think about one action. ask and answer like this
"Hi, _______." "What are you doing?" " I am ____________."
- And write name matching action card on the survey sheet.
♠ 【Activity 2】Mime game
• Make student mime and guess "What is he/she doing?"
- Teacher divides the class into two groups.
- Each team acts out the motions, students describe them.
(Acting out the motion of dancing)
Teacher: What is he/she doing?
Student: He/She is dancing.
- If the answer was correct, each team got a point.
♠ 【Activity 3】Filling in blanks of song
• Make student listen to the song and figure out various action verbs with filling in
blank
- Listen to 'Lemon tree' song.
- Fill in blank on the sheet.
