A2: Hexameters for the nervous with Hilary Walters Do you lack confidence when dealing with Latin metre? This group will give you some fool-proof methods to pass on to your pupils. We will concentrate on Hexameters but could look at other metres if required. A3: The Aeneid and Roman History with Fiona Gow We will share ideas on how to teach the historical background to the Aeneid, looking particularly at Jupiter's speech in Book 1 and the Parade of Heroes in Book 6. A4: A2 Set Text Sophocles’ Antigone with Pat Bunting We shall be looking at sections of the set text with the A2 style questions in mind. Please bring any text you are using and any materials you are willing to share. A5: GCSE Prose with Martin Gibson The session will look at revision activities and stylistic questions (with a focus on 10 mark questions) for OCR ‘Death of Pliny the Elder’, ‘Day in Life of Pliny the Elder’ and ‘Arria’. Please bring your own copy of the Latin and be ready to share ideas. A6: Read it Right with John Hazel This will be an opportunity for teachers who wish to extend their knowledge and practice of the oral side of teaching Latin to do so. There will be a chance to ask questions as well as to learn something of the phonetics of Classical Latin, and even to spend a little time on reading verse. A7: Classics and ICT catch-up: A follow-up to the Summer School Option Group open to all with Helen Lowe An opportunity to feedback on practical experience and share successful resources and strategies for embedding ICT into teaching and learning Classics subjects OPTION GROUPS B B1: Philosophy for Children with Marelle Rice Encourage your students to think critically, caringly, creatively and collaboratively the Socratic way. Thinker’s Midwife and P4C trainer Marelle Rice will lead an enquiry on the many ways in which Classicists and philosophers can work together. B2: The Primary School Latin Explosion with Linda Soames A chance to find out about the exciting developments with Latin in primary schools nationally. Now that Latin can be part of the languages curriculum at Key Stage 2, how is the Classics community maximising this opportunity? We shall look at the work of the Primary School Latin Project and the Minimus course, the role of Classics for All and other initiatives involving universities and senior schools. This will be an open discussion with an opportunity to share your thoughts and experiences too. B3: Raising the Classics Profile with Duncan Perry In this session we will be looking at ways to promote the subject from Y9 onwards by reflecting on the reasons why we study Classics in schools. B4: CLC 1 and CLC 2 with Sarah Williams The session will consider teaching approaches and resources for Cambridge Latin Course Books 1 and 2. It is suitable for both new users and experienced practitioners. You may find it helpful to bring a copy of the books to the session. B5: Language Awareness with Ian Gill This session will look at the links between the classical languages and modern English, and will include an overview of the development of the Romance languages from Latin. The approach will be primarily phonological but will include considerations of idiom, semantics and style. B6: Classical Workbooks, Audio and the Internet with David Carter This session will look at the latest resources being developed for preparation of Latin and Greek literary texts. We will consider the learning value of audio files and primers, and discuss strategies for use at home and in the classroom. B7: AQA Classical Civilisation: Optimising achievement with Helen Lowe We will look at techniques to increase performance in AS and A2 units. OPTION GROUPS C C1: WJEC's New Latin GCSE with Alan Clague A summary of the specification and the sample assessment materials with Alan Clague, the Subject Officer. C2: Achieving variety at GCSE and A Level with Helen Morrison Be prepared to share ideas and experiences about teaching literature for GCSE and A Level Latin and/or Greek. What makes tricky texts accessible linguistically and/or psychologically? How do we provide for all ability levels and learning styles? C3: Classroom Games with Lynda Goss Games appropriate for Latin and Classical Civilisation to all levels will be presented and played, as it is usually easier to see how a game works from practical experience. Participants are welcome to bring examples of tried and tested games of their own. C4: Tacitus Annales 4 – Is it really History? with Alison Henshaw A quick look at the 2016/7 A2 prescription. Please bring along any resources you would be willing to share. C5: GCSE Iliad 1 with Laura Beech We shall focus on the GCSE Greek prescription for May/June 2016 and look particularly at helping students to prepare for examination. Please bring a copy of the text and any useful resources. C6: Ovid GCSE OCR Anthology with Lauren Douglas Translation and discussion of style in Ovid's Ars Amatoria 1.44-63, 89-126 from the OCR Latin Anthology, with specific focus on examination-style questions in preparation for the 2016 & 2017 GCSE Latin Verse papers. C7: Creative Worksheets with Sarah Parnaby We shall look at using visually stimulating worksheets to capture the pupils' imagination regarding set texts, to enhance their understanding and increase their retention as well as help them revise.
